I am absolutely amazed and disgusted at the current Utah State Legislature! The Public Education Subcommittee just voted to remove funding for high school students to learn CPR, along with many other social programs. How much, you ask? A mere $6 per sophomore-age student. For that price, these students learned scene safety, BSI/PPE (personal protection), patient assessment skills, how to treat a heart attack or stroke patient, FBAO (choking), and CPR and AED skills for all ages, including infants! Utah is one of 42 states that has this training as a graduation requirement, which means they understand the value of bystander CPR and basic training to act in an emergency. Now, the current legislature wants to repeal that law! Why? Are we no longer valuing the ability to help our family, friends, neighbors, or perfect strangers? I am in complete awe. If you agree that this is wrong, please call, text, or email your representatives. I believe anything can be fixed with proper education and a bit of humanity. I am not sure where we will be if we continue to sit back and allow these things to happen.
