Spot the difference. The letter ‘E’ stands for ‘Evolving’.

Does one of your moles look different than the others? In the last few, has it changed shape, color, texture or even border?

Might be time to get it checked out with your dermatologist. Precancerous or cancerous moles exhibit certain trends like changing in shape. If you see this happening, be sure to get it examined to better understand what to do next.

Know the warning signs of Melanoma with the ABCDE’s!
The letter ‘D’ stands for ‘Diameter’ or the size of the mole. If the mole you are concerned about appears to be bigger than a pencil eraser, it is important that you call your dermatologist to get it evaluated further. If a mole has grown in size since your last TBSE (total body skin exam), make sure you tell your physician during your next consultation.

How often should I get a TBSE (Total Body Skin Exam)?

Similar to your yearly physical exam and yearly blood work, it is recommended that you visit your dermatologist once a year for a total body skin exam. If you have a history of skin cancer, your dermatologist may recommend bi-annual skin exams.

During this visit, your dermatologist can review any areas of concerns you may have and may also begin ‘mole mapping’. Mole mapping is a medical record of an image or series of images that allows your physician to track the changes of any lesions.

This process gives the physician the opportunity to better assess the need to biopsy or possible skin surgery. Consistent TBSE’s are the best offense to fend off potential harmful skin cancers down the road.

Know the warning signs of Melanoma with the ABCDE’s!

The letter ‘C’ stands for ‘Color’. If the spot has varying colors from one area to the next, such as shades of tan, brown or black, or areas of white, red, or blue, you should definitely bring this to the attention of your dermatologist during a TeleDerm visit with us.

We can assess the color through pre-sent photos and during the video consultation to better determine next steps. Remember the ABCDE rule: A-Asymmetry; B-Border; C-Color;D-Diameter; E-Evolving.

We are also now seeing patients in office on an adjusted schedule within CDC and state level guidelines.

TRUE or FALSE? Being tan prevents skin cancer!

FALSE: Being a darker skin tone (like a Fitzpatrick 4,5 and 6) does not necessarily mean you won’t burn or be susceptible to harmful skin cancers.

According to skincancer.org: ‘Skin cancers are less prevalent in non white racial ethnic groups, but when they occur, they tend to be diagnosed at a later stage and, as a result, have a worse prognosis.

One study, for example, found an average five-year melanoma survival rate of only 65 percent in black people versus 91 percent in white people. Another showed that late-stage melanoma diagnoses are more common in Hispanic and black patients than in non-Hispanic white patients.’

It is so important for you to use daily SPF even if you have olive or deeper skin tones. Melanoma can be better prevented by making SPF a part of your daily routine.

Remember, we are offering 15% off all sun protection products through the end of the month!! Call us for more information: 847.499.5500 or email at: contact@medovate.io.

What is photo aging?

Photo aging is caused by overexposure or extended exposure to UV rays over a period of time and is responsible for about 90% of the skin aging process.

Photo aging causes a myriad of issues including: wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, exacerbation of eczema or melasma, increased risk of skin breakdown and skin cancer!
It affects every layer of your skin.

Photo aging can be minimized and slowed down extensively by applying sun protection of SPF 30 or higher as a part of your everyday skincare routine.

This month, Medovate Dermatology is offering 15% off all sun protection products.

To place your order, please call our office at 847.499.5500. We carry Elta MD and ISDIN sun protection products.

Or email us at contact@medovate.io.

How often should I get a TBSE (total body skin exam)?

Dr. David Mann reminds patients to look at your own skin everyday, and keep an eye out for anything that looks suspicious, using the ABCDE’s as guidelines.

Generally, a thorough total body skin exam can be scheduled annually, unless you have had a history of skin cancer or other risk factors.

Medovate Dermatology is reopening its doors on a limited basis next week, Monday, May 18 for in office visits. We will still be offering TeleDerm visits for those who wish to continue to stay at home.

We can schedule you for an in-office visit for next week to get your TBSE, and in the meantime, we will still use TeleDerm to evaluate any spots you notice on your skin..

Call 847.499.5500 or email us at: contact@medovate.io when you are ready for a skin check!

“UPF” or ultraviolet protective factor clothing is an important part of sun protection. Sun protective clothing is produced from a fabric rated for its level of ultraviolet protection.

A special type of weave structure and thickness produces sun protective properties. UPF clothing should be worn anytime you are going to be outside for an extended period, such as: mowing the lawn or gardening, running, or water sports such as surfing, boating or canoeing (where UV rays are magnified from the water reflection).

UPF fabric is generally lightweight and many brands make modern styles with very breathable fabrics. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed sun safety hat and UV-protective sunglasses as part of your sun safety gear!

Stay cool, protected and safe!

Know the warning signs of Melanoma with the ABCDE’s!

The ‘B’ stands for ‘border’, meaning that a jagged, uneven, or poorly defined border needs to be better evaluated by your physician and monitored by you.

If you notice this warning sign, or any of the other key signs, contact us and we will schedule a TeleDerm consultation to assess any moles or spots on your skin that look suspicious.

Remember the ABCDE rule: A-Asymmetry; B-Border; C-Color;D-Diameter; E-Evolving.
