Mallory went to the hospital after she began acting strangely and having trouble breathing. She was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia, which led to respiratory failure. Her care team placed a tracheostomy tube to help her breathe and transferred her to Kindred Hospital The Palm Beaches, once her condition had stabilized.

At Kindred, her care team first addressed her respiratory needs. They worked with her on breathing exercises and slowly began reducing her ventilatory support and conducting weaning trials.

In physical therapy, she completed exercises that strengthened her muscles and increased her endurance, helping her move independently. In occupational therapy, she participated in activities that developed her fine motor skills and coordination so that she could better take care of herself. Her speech therapist also worked with her to improve her ability to communicate and to safely swallow foods.

Finally, she was able to come off the ventilator entirely and achieved the ultimate goal – breathing on her own. After making tremendous progress, Mallory was able to be discharged home to continue her recovery with her loved ones.

Arriving at the hospital with a brain bleed, Muhammad required immediate surgical intervention. As part of his treatment, he needed a feeding (PEG) tube and a tracheostomy tube placed for breathing support. His care team determined that he needed specialized acute care and referred him to Kindred Hospital The Palm Beaches.

When he came to Kindred, he could not breathe on his own, speak even with a speaking valve, or eat by mouth. He also required a lot of support from his therapists to do any exercise at the bedside. His interdisciplinary care team got to work developing a customized care plan.

With the help of pulmonologists and respiratory therapists, Muhammad began breathing exercises and weaning trials with the goal of breathing independence. His physical and occupational therapists started working with him even while he still had the ventilator to increase his mobility. Although he needed to take many breaks, he pressed on and started to gain back his strength and endurance.

Working with a speech therapist and dietitian, he practiced communicating and swallowing so that he could talk and eat on his own again.

Finally, he was weaned from the ventilator, and by the time of discharge to Kindred’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit, he was talking and eating soft foods by mouth.

After falling down at home, Judith was diagnosed with bleeding in the brain requiring immediate surgery. She was also diagnosed with respiratory failure, requiring her to have a feeding tube and a ventilator to provide breathing support. Once her condition had stabilized, she was transferred to Kindred Hospital The Palm Beaches for specialized acute care and rehabilitation.

At Kindred, Judith’s interdisciplinary care team immediately started working on her lung strength. With the help of a respiratory therapist, Judith began increasing her lung capacity and endurance.

As she worked toward ventilator weaning, she increasingly participated in physical and occupational therapy. When she arrived, she could not even move on her own in bed, much less take care of herself. But she showed up to each therapy session with determination and a joyful spirit, which helped her advance to standing and transferring to a chair with help.

Working with a speech therapist also helped her reclaim her voice and begin eating and drinking by mouth again. Achieving these milestones gave her the momentum she needed to reach the final goal of ventilator weaning. By the time Judith was discharged to Kindred’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit, she had regained her breathing and eating independence and was ready to take the next steps in her rehabilitation journey.

Jean was admitted to a local hospital after he began acting strangely and showing possible signs of a seizure. Imaging revealed a brainstem stroke, and while he was at the hospital, he developed respiratory failure requiring breathing support.

His care team determined the best course of action would be to transfer him to Kindred Hospital The Palm Beaches for specialized acute care and rehabilitation.
When he arrived at Kindred, he had a tracheostomy for breathing support and a feeding tube. He also could not sit at the edge of the bed without help or talk.

His team immediately began breathing exercises and weaning trials to remove the ventilator as soon as possible. While they were working toward his breathing independence, he was participating in physical and occupational therapy to get him moving again. His speech therapist also led him in exercises to help him talk and swallow safely.

With hard work and a dedicated team, Jean started walking with a rolling walker and breathing on his own for short periods of time. At the time of discharge to Kindred Hospital’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit, he could walk 30 ft with his walker, eat food and drink by mouth, and most remarkably, could breathe on his own again.

Patients at Kindred Hospitals begin receiving gentle in-bed therapy as soon as they are able to, progressing to more advanced movements as they recover. Our physical therapists (PTs) help even the most complicated patients, including those on mechanical ventilation, get on their feet. We are grateful for all our PTs who help our patients take the next step in their recovery journeys.
