Today we’re celebrating 12 years of Janine Underwood’s leadership at Bradley Free Clinic! During that time, Bradley has grown from a Tuesday and Thursday evening only acute care free clinic into a true medical home for more than 3,300 underserved neighbors across the Roanoke Valley. Janine’s vision has helped bring medical, dental, behavioral health, and pharmacy services together under one roof.

Thank you, Janine, for your leadership and commitment to our community!

As we close out January and Substance Use Disorder Treatment Awareness Month, let us remember to continue to bring awareness and services to those who need it most!
As temperatures drop to dangerously cold levels and winter weather disrupts our regular routines, the need for connection, outreach, and support becomes even more urgent. Through the HOPE Initiative, we work to meet people where they are, helping them get out of the cold and connected to treatment. Frigid weather increases health risks, worsens substance use and mental health challenges, and makes access to treatment even harder for those already facing barriers.
Treatment and Outreach Saves Lives! Consider giving a donation to assist us in continuing to provide these lifesaving services. Whether it’s helping someone find a warm place to stay, connecting them to substance use or mental health treatment, supplying unhoused individuals with blankets, providing food to those in need, or simply showing up with compassion and consistency, the HOPE Initiative reminds our community that recovery and support don’t pause for the weather.
As we continue to bring awareness to the disease of addiction and the fact that recovery is possible, I hope that each of you consider helping our most vulnerable neighbors.

As we continue to honor Substance Use Disorder Treatment Awareness Month, we’re shining a light on the real, life-changing work of the HOPE Initiative.
The HOPE Initiative supports individuals navigating substance use and mental health challenges by meeting them where they are—offering connection, care coordination, education, and compassionate support. For participants, HOPE can mean the difference between feeling alone and feeling supported, between barriers and pathways forward, and between crisis and stability.
Recovery is not one-size-fits-all. HOPE embraces multiple pathways and respects each participant’s right to choose what works best for them. Every journey matters, and every step forward deserves support.
That support can take many forms: a conversation, clothing and hygiene items, a bus ticket, shoes for a new job, or a deposit for recovery housing.
In recognition of Substance Use Disorder Treatment Awareness Month, we invite our community to help by donating to our GoFundMe. Your contribution helps remove barriers and supports individuals on their recovery journeys.
Together, we can reduce stigma, strengthen recovery, and remind people that help is available—and recovery is possible.

As we move forward with acknowledging that January is aimed at bringing awareness to Substance Use Disorder Treatment, this week we’re highlighting an essential truth about recovery: there are multiple pathways to recovery. Different treatment options exist for people with a substance use disorder and here at Bradley Free Clinic’s HOPE Initiative we honor a person’s right to choose. The HOPE Initiative is committed to meeting individuals where they are, reducing barriers to care, and supporting multiple pathways to recovery. By offering education, connection to services, and compassionate outreach, the HOPE Initiative helps ensure that recovery is not a one-size-fits-all expectation but a personalized, human journey.

Every path forward deserves respect and every step counts! Let us help you take those steps!

JANUARY IS SUBSTANCE USE TREATMENT AWARENESS MONTH
It’s a time to raise awareness about effective, evidence-based treatment and the real barriers people face on their path to recovery.
At Bradley Free Clinic, we believe healthcare is a human right. Through the HOPE Initiative, we support individuals year-round by helping them navigate treatment and connect to vital resources. In 2025, we assisted 1,081 participants in overcoming challenges such as transportation needs, identification barriers, mental health concerns, housing instability, and food insecurity.
The HOPE Initiative is a participant-centered program led by trained peer recovery specialists and community health workers who meet people where they are and walk alongside them with dignity and compassion.
By addressing both health and social needs, we help strengthen recovery, improve outcomes, and build a healthier community.
And since no one should have to navigate recovery alone, we are here to help!
