Our Strategy and Sustainability Manager, Rhianna, and Chief Development Officer, Jill, were so honored to be invited to the Junior League of Roanoke Valley’s Collaborative Lunch today for nonprofits, held at the Community Empowerment Center at Booker T. Washington.

The JLRV has been invaluable to FSRV over the years; from helping us to amend our Charter and making a name change in 1938 to participating in our annual dinner each fall, to helping with so many special projects! We are forever grateful!

FSRV was founded in 1901 as the "Charity Organization Society," then soon became "Associated Charities," which we were known as until 1929, when the name changed to the "Family Welfare Society." There were no public welfare departments back then, so we served in that capacity for Roanoke City.

In 1938, with the urging of and with funding from the Junior League of Roanoke Valley, we amended our Charter and became the "Family Service Association." This is our front window, and we were located at 116 Kirk Avenue above Reed's Drug Store. At the time, we were known as a "generalized casework agency," and were licensed by the State as a Foster Care agency. We only had three or four staff members which is so amazing!
