: Get to know Catherine Backus, an Artist-in-Residence with Carilion Clinic Keeley Healing Arts Program!
π΅ Tell us about your role:
My medium is music, and as an Artist-in-Residence primarily based at Carilion Institute for Orthopaedics and Neurosciences (ION), I facilitate an arts-based support group for brain injury and stroke survivors once a month. I also provide musical support to different units around Carilion, acting as a "Human Jukebox" to give staff a break throughout their workdays.
π΅ What do you like most about being part of the Keeley Healing Arts Program?
I love supporting both staff and patients with music; it's one of the few mediums that activates every part of the brain, so it's a wonderful tool for both healing and self-care. One single song can turn a person's day around. It's a joy to share music with others in any setting!
Join Catherine for music, movement and community at the Brain Injury Support Group! This group meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 12 β 1 p.m. at Carilion ION (2331 Franklin Rd., SW, Roanoke, VA 24014).
