Since 1930, Texas Tavern has been a Roanoke institution, serving generations with a sense of place, tradition, and stories that never fade. Known for its chili dogs, late-night counter service, and unmistakable character, it remains a place where locals and visitors alike experience a true piece of Roanoke’s history. A visit is simple, authentic, and rooted in community, the kind of experience that stays with you long after you leave.

At Evergreen Memorial Trust, we carry that same commitment to legacy and community, preserving the memories of our neighbors with dignity and care that stand the test of time.

As May begins and spring comes into full bloom, it is a time of renewal, reflection, and visiting the places that connect us to those we love. At Evergreen Memorial Trust, our cemeteries offer a peaceful setting to remember, honor, and care for those who matter most, and every life deserves a place that is tended and remembered.

When a loved one’s cremation remains are entrusted to a family, they carry deep meaning and deserve lasting care and protection.

At Evergreen Memorial Trust, we often remind families: “Gone is Gone.” If cremation remains are misplaced, lost in a move, damaged, or accidentally discarded, they cannot be replaced. That is why many families choose permanent, secure placement for cremation remains in a cemetery setting—whether in a niche, columbarium, or burial space designed to protect and honor a life for generations.

A secure resting place ensures that remembrance is never lost and that future generations will always know where to visit, reflect, and remember. Because some things are simply too important to risk. At all five EMT locations, we understand this and want you to know that we offer peace of mind at affordable costs and personal understanding that only comes from experience.

Grief Tip: Expressing gratitude can help as you grieve.

"Expressing gratitude can be a valuable tool when it comes to healing from grief. When we’re mourning a deep loss, many tend to focus on only negative feelings. Reminding ourselves of our blessings can foster a sense of peace and balance. Creating the habit of practicing gratitude on a daily basis can improve not only our mental health, but also physical as well—which leads to a healthy grief recovery." Arbor Day reminds us that trees stand as quiet symbols of life, renewal, and lasting legacy. As forester and conservationist John Muir once wrote: “Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.”

At Evergreen Memorial Trust, our Be-A-Tree Burial Service honors this beautiful connection between life and nature. Through natural burial and tree planting, a life remembered becomes a living legacy . . . growing, sheltering, and renewing the earth for generations to come.

On this Arbor Day, we celebrate the idea that remembrance can take root and continue to grow. Please call an EMT Family Service Counselor to discuss our Be-A-Tree option at 1-800-870-2593.

April 22 is Earth Day, and that means us taking a moment to reflect on our relationship with the land that sustains us. At Evergreen Memorial Trust, we believe remembrance can honor that connection. Our Natural Burial Services at Forest Rest in Boones Mill, Virginia, offers a gentle return to the earth.

Natural burial employs no chemical embalming, no vault, and no expensive casket. Families may choose a biodegradable linen shroud or a simple wooden box, helping minimize a burial’s environmental footprint while allowing the land to remain natural and undisturbed.

This Earth Day, we remember that caring for the earth can continue even in the way we say goodbye.

April 17 marks the birthday of Benjamin Franklin: printer, inventor, statesman, and one of the wisest voices of early America.

Franklin once wrote:
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”

At Evergreen Memorial Trust, we believe our shared history lives through the stories we preserve and the lives we remember. Each generation teaches the next not only through words but through the legacy we leave behind.

On Franklin’s birthday, take a moment to reflect on the lessons passed down through your family and community, because remembrance is one of the greatest teachers of all.

At Evergreen Memorial Trust, we believe families should never be left wondering if everything was taken care of. When we say done, we mean DONE.

The details are handled.
The work is completed.
The promises are kept.
The family can rest easier.

That is the Evergreen difference.

Roanoke’s Hidden Arboretum Opens for a Special Spring Tree Tour

Evergreen Burial Park will celebrate the arrival of spring with a Tree Walking Tour on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. The rain or shine tour will begin at the cemetery’s main office and is open to the public. No registration is required.

The park features more than 25 native and non-native tree species, making it an important urban habitat and a beautiful place for the public to learn about the region’s natural heritage. For over a century, Evergreen’s reputation as an arboretum—the park’s natural, aesthetic, and spiritual significance to the Roanoke community—has been recognized.

The Tree Walking Tour offers visitors a chance to experience both the natural beauty and historical richness of Evergreen Burial Park in a relaxed and educational setting.

For more information about Evergreen Burial Park or the Tree Walking Tour, visit the park’s website or page, or call (540) 342-2593.
