It can be difficult to talk to someone who has suffered a loss or who is grieving. The desire to say the right thing is real, and the fear of saying the wrong thing is as equally real. Instead of a hollow “cheer up” or “snap out of it” (which we know you know better), try an empathetic, “What can I do to help?” or remind them, “You’re not alone—I’m listening if you want to talk.”

By holding healing space, being patient, and practicing active listening skills, you are giving a person an opportunity to discuss how they are experiencing loss instead of being told how to experience it. Hope this helps!
