Virginia Society for Clinical Social Work Roanoke Chapter This is the Roanoke Chapter of The Virginia Society for Clinical Social Work, Inc. (VSCSW).

VSCSW is an organization devoted to the practice of clinical social work at the highest standard. It is comprised of individual clinical social workers who are grouped into four regional chapters: Blue Ridge (around Charlottesville), Eastern Virginia (Tidewater area), Richmond and Roanoke. The chapters are coordinated by the State Board but carry out activities that are relevant to their members and sensitive to the needs of their geographic areas.

We're kicking off our first luncheon of the year on September 19, 2012 at our usual spot at 419 West Restaurant from 12:00 to 1:30. Remember, we'll be meeting every 3rd Wednesday of the month, so go ahead and mark your calendars. It'll be the same time, same place but with a different topic and speaker.

This month, our speaker is Steve Strosnider.

The April Luncheon will be Wednesday, 4/18/12 at 419 West from 12-1:30 p.m. Dr. Desai will speak about adolescent addiction. Price of lunch is $13.

Objectives:
1. To understand addiction in the adolescent population.
2. To become aware of treatment modalities available in the area.
3. To learn the role of family therapy in treatment.

Speaker Information: Dr. Desai received his medical degree from Baroda M.S. University in India and completed his psychiatric residency through New York Medical College. He has worked in the Roanoke area since 1980. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with special qualifications in Geriatrics, Addictionology, and Adolescent Psychiatry. He founded Walnut Avenue Associates and Avenues to Recovery which has served the Roanoke community since 1981 and 2002, respectively.

Allyson Yeatts will be presenting on Crisis Intervention and Length of Services
Objectives:
1. To identify what crisis intervention services are
2. To identify what the Medicaid regulations are dictating regarding crisis intervention services
3. To identify Potential influences on the length of crisis intervention services

Maude Hunter-Sloan will be presenting Practicum Supervision: From Students to Professionals
Objectives:
1. CSWE regulations
2. What students want/What supervisors provide
3. Implications for the field

The February Luncheon will be Wednesday 2/15/12 from 12-1:30 at 419 West Restaurant. David R. Wiggins, Ph.D. will be speaking about ADHD.

Objectives:
1. Learn ten secondary symptoms of ADHD
2. Identify ten effective treatments for ADHD besides medication
3. Learn ten effective organizational strategies for ADHD
4. Find out the latest research on ADHD

Speaker Information: David R. Wiggins, Ph.D. is a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice at Associates in Brief Therapy in Roanoke, Virginia. He received his Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Virginia Tech in 1995, an Ed.S. degree in Counseling from the University of Virginia in 1988 and a Master's degree in Community Agency Counseling from James Madison University in 1984. His dissertation was on the effects of a psychoeducational group on the thoughts, feelings, and actions of adults with ADHD. Prior to private practice, he was the Coordinator of Counseling at Jefferson College of Health Sciences.

Save the date for the January Luncheon on Wednesday, 1/18/12 from 12-1:30 at Four Nineteen West. Katherine Snead, LPC, EAT will be presenting Expressive Therapy Practices Used in a Psychiatric Setting.

Objectives:

1. Learn one underlying theory of expressive therapy practice

2. Identify three major goals of expressive therapy interventions for treatment of mental illness

3. Learn two expressive arts interventions to use in conjunction with current practices

Katherine Snead is an Expressive Art Therapist and LPC in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at Carilion Clinic. She has experience providing expressive therapy to children, adolescents, and adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
