Piedmont Community Services is working with a 56-year-old individual who lives independently and is at risk of losing the ability to safely prepare meals in her home. Cooking is an important daily activity for her and supports both her independence and overall well-being.

Currently, her oven is non-functional, and only one burner on her stovetop is working, significantly limiting her ability to cook meals safely and consistently. Without community support, she may experience limited access to nutritious food and increased reliance on outside services.

We are requesting the following one-time assistance:

A gently used stove or stovetop

Transportation and installation of the appliance

Removal and responsible disposal of the non-working unit

Given the upcoming holiday season, we are requesting that this need be addressed as soon as possible, ideally before Christmas. Meeting this request will help ensure the individual can continue to prepare meals in her home, reducing the risk of nutritional decline and helping her remain safe and independent. Any support toward this request would be greatly appreciated and will have an immediate, meaningful impact - especially during this holiday season.

Winter weather is on the way, and a little preparation can make a big difference—especially for our older neighbors. As temperatures drop, simple safety steps like dressing in warm layers, using space heaters carefully, and keeping walkways clear can help prevent cold-weather injuries.

Now is also a great time to check carbon monoxide detectors and make sure loved ones are staying hydrated and eating well to support their immune systems.

Let’s look out for one another this season. A small act of care can go a long way in keeping our community safe and warm.

Today, we officially launched CareForward across the City of Martinsville as well as Patrick, Henry, and Franklin Counties — bringing neighbors, volunteers, and partners together to strengthen the fabric of our communities.

A heartfelt thank you to all who attended and to every organization helping us move care forward. We’re especially grateful to Piedmont Community Services and DBHDS, who made this expansion possible!

Together, we’re building a stronger, more connected community where no one faces hardship alone.

Wow! This request was met before we could publish it to social media! Great work to the Care Action Network and our partners!

The Request:
PCS is working with a dedicated female veteran who lives in her own home and is in need of support to maintain her mobility and independence. Following surgery for a compound fracture, her condition has progressed into a chronic health challenge. She now alternates between using a wheelchair and a walker and manages her daily activities while living alone.

At this time, entering and exiting her home has become increasingly difficult and unsafe. The steps leading to her front porch pose a significant risk of falls, especially given her limited mobility. To ensure she can safely access her home, she needs a ramp installed at her front entrance. This modification is essential to help her navigate her home environment with stability and confidence.

We are reaching out to the volunteer network for assistance in obtaining or constructing a ramp, or through financial support toward materials. Providing this ramp will greatly improve her safety, support her independence, and have a meaningful impact on her day-to-day life.

Items Needed:
Build or Donate a Wheelchair Ramp

Ever wondered just how easy it is to volunteer with CareForward? Let’s just say… it’s so simple, even a cat can do it!

Topher the cat accidentally “volunteered” by walking across the keyboard—and honestly, we can’t blame him. He saw a neighbor in need and wanted to help!

If you’re ready to make a difference (on purpose), follow Topher’s lead and sign up today at CareForward.io.

Your community—and maybe your pets—will thank you!

Washington County, VA is working with a young adult, living with a chronic illness and significant physical disability, who urgently needs a replacement gel battery for their motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair is currently inoperable, leaving the individual confined to bed, which has already resulted in painful bed sores, increased depression, and a growing risk of further medical complications.

A functioning wheelchair is critical to this person’s well-being. It is the only way they can attend necessary medical and behavioral health appointments, complete basic daily activities, and reconnect with others in their community. Reliable mobility will help reduce isolation while restoring independence, stability, and overall quality of life.

We are seeking a contribution toward the purchase, or a business who would be interested in offering a discount or contribution of the battery itself, so the wheelchair can be repaired as quickly as possible.

Item Needed:

MK Powered Gel Battery M24SLDGFT, 12V 73AH (compatible with the C400 Permobil Electric Wheelchair)

Without support, this individual is at risk of further decline and potential hospitalization. Any contribution will make an immediate and meaningful difference. Thank you for your consideration.
