On this blustery cold St. Patrick’s Day, we were thrilled to have an indoor groundbreaking to celebrate the construction of our new Club House—the next phase of our Friendship Park project. Our President and CEO Joe Hoff was joined by Board Members NL Bishop, Lucian Grove, resident Betty Luber and Development Officer Sarah Stephens. Our culinary team put together an assortment of treats including—Dirt Cake! Each desert was served with a little shovel spoon. Attendees had a chance to write their names and wishes on a leaf for our Giving Tree.

We had a blast hoppin’ and boppin’ at our Funny Sock Sock Hop Party!
Residents and team members showed up in their most creative socks—from Bob Ross masterpieces to Oscar the Grouch and even two different Betty Boop styles!

There were lots of laughs, great music, and plenty of toe-tapping fun. Who knew socks could bring so much personality to the dance floor?

What if the place you live could actually help you live longer and healthier?

Research continues to show that older adults who remain socially connected, physically active, well nourished, and supported by accessible healthcare experience better health outcomes and greater longevity. At Friendship, independent living is designed around those very principles. It’s not simply about maintenance-free living—it’s about creating an environment where residents can truly thrive.

Friendship supports longer, healthier lives in many ways--one of them is through the power of social engagement.

Loneliness has been identified as one of the greatest health risks for older adults. In fact, studies from the National Institute on Aging suggest that chronic isolation can increase the risk of dementia, heart disease, and depression.

Independent living at Friendship is built around community. Residents enjoy:

-Clubs and interest groups
-Cultural events and holiday gatherings
-Volunteer opportunities
-Games and social gatherings
-Educational programs and lifelong learning

These daily interactions foster meaningful relationships and a strong sense of belonging. When residents wakeup each day with friends nearby and something to look forward to, their mental and emotional wellbeing improves dramatically.

At Friendship, independent living is more than a housing option—it’s a lifestyle built around connection and confidence for the future.

If you’re exploring options for active, independent living in Roanoke and Salem, Virginia, we invite you to learn more about how Friendship supports vibrant, healthy aging.

Today FRIENDSHIP ASSISTED LIVING hosted a celebration of Black History Month featuring Rev. Edward T. Burton, a Friendship Independent Living resident, pastor, Civil Rights leader and Army Veteran, AND Captain Deatria Muse, the first female African-American Captain in Roanoke City’s Sheriff’s Office. Rev. Burton shared his experiences with Martin Luther King, Jr., and helping to integrate Roanoke restaurants. Captain Muse recognized our resident Frankie who served in the Sherrifs office from 1988-2000–paving the way for other African-American women.

We’re proud to sponsor Kids Square Children’s Museum—and even prouder of what that partnership makes possible.

Each month, families who visit Kids Square take time to create handmade cards for our residents at Friendship Retirement Community. Those simple notes, colorful drawings, and heartfelt messages travel straight from little hands to older hearts—and the impact is powerful. On Valentine's Day, our sister site Friendship Richield Living received cards and gifts for their Health Center residents.

At Friendship, we believe intergenerational experiences are essential to building a stronger, more connected community. When children and seniors share kindness, creativity, and stories (even through something as small as a card), everyone benefits. Smiles are exchanged. Loneliness is eased. And meaningful connections are formed across generations.

Thank you to Kids Square and the amazing families who help remind our residents that they are loved, remembered, and part of something bigger.

Because community is better—at every age—when we grow it together.
