To all my patients:

It looks like the governor is going to allow businesses to slowly phase back into work in the next few weeks. At this time, the outpatient surgery center may allow me to begin scheduling cases beginning on May 15th. Patients who have already paid and were postponed will have priority on re-scheduling. I plan to begin seeing patients at the office on May 6th. HOWEVER, if there is an upturn in the number of COVID-19 cases reported in our area before then, these plans will change and we may need to wait longer.

The safety of my patients, my staff, and my community is the number one priority. To that end, I will be instituting the following policies for patients coming to my office:

1. As we have done for years, we will call to confirm your appointment the day before your visit. If you have a cough, sore throat, fever, or shortness of breath, tell us so we can re- schedule your visit.
2. Come alone unless you are a minor. Minors should have only one parent with them.
3. When you get to the office, call from your car and let us know you are here. Stay in your car till we call you to come in or come and get you.
4. You MUST bring YOUR OWN facemask. We do not have masks to give to patients. If you do not have a facemask, we will need to re-schedule your appointment.
5. We will not have more than two patients in our waiting room at any time.
6. Your temperature will be taken before you are taken back to the exam room. If it is above 99.9, your appointment will be re-scheduled.
7. All staff will wear masks at all times. Clinical staff will also wear gloves that are changed between patients.
8. All rooms and surfaces will be sanitized between patients.

Please bear with us as these measures will take some getting used to. Remember that they are in place for your own safety.

AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ALL MY PATIENTS:
In accordance with the new CMS recommendation that all elective surgeries, non-essential medical, surgical and dental procedures be delayed during the COVID-19 outbreak, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has recommended that all plastic surgeons cease providing any elective or non-essential services.

We live and work in a critically different medical reality—a rapidly evolving viral pandemic that is projected to, if unchecked, kill many Americans and many more around the world. Public health experts agree that we must do two things on an urgent basis:

First, we must reduce the risk of the SARS-CoV-2 virus transmission from human to human as well as the rate of new case development. Only in that way can we flatten the curve and not overwhelm our very limited supply of hospital beds, ICU beds, ventilators and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines. We have already hit that stage in a few hard-hit metropolitan areas.

Second, we must as a nation conserve needed disposable medical supplies and focus them to the hospitals where they are most needed.

This disease is now in every state and the number of new cases is currently doubling every one to two days. Already, a handful of physician colleagues in other specialties have died from COVID-19. It is essential that I as a physician and as responsible human being do what I can and must to reduce viral transmission and enhance our nation's ability to care for those desperately ill from the disease. Public health experts unanimously agree that our window to modify the spread of disease is a narrow one that will soon close.

Accordingly, for the next two weeks, I will provide only urgent or emergent care as well as the needed post-operative care for patients who recently underwent procedures. This includes both office-based procedures and care as well as those performed in an ambulatory surgery center or hospital-based setting. "Urgency" is determined by physician judgment and will always take into account the individual patient's medical and social circumstances. Each of us has a societal responsibility to not function as a vector of a potentially fatal disease—and one for which a widely available treatment or vaccine does not currently exist.

All other factors—business, finance, inconvenience, etc.—are remotely secondary. This is an existential crisis. I must respond to it and support my colleagues and my community. Also, as a physician have a social responsibility to remain healthy in the event that my services are needed for patients.

I hope that all of you will understand why I am taking these extreme and unprecedented measures and hope that they will help us to return to “business as usual” as safely and quickly as possible.

What I am doing to ensure patient safety during the outbreak of COVID-19

Dear Patient,

The safety and welfare of my patients and staff are of primary importance to me. In response to the threats posed by the current corona virus epidemic of COVID-19, I have instituted the following policies:

All patients are being asked to sign an attestation that they are free of the most common symptoms of COVID-19: cough, fever, or shortness of breath.
Any patient who has a cough, fever, or acute onset of shortness of breath should contact their primary care physician and will be re-scheduled at our office.
If it is medically necessary to see a patient with these symptoms, the patient will be given a mask to wear during his/her examination.
Since droplets from the nose and mouth travel about three feet, my staff and I will maintain a distance of at least three feet from you when speaking to you. When I examine you or perform any procedure, I will put on a mask for your safety. The mask protects you from an illness I may have acquired but am unaware of. This is no different than what most of us are used to seeing at our dentist’s office.
All medical personnel will wash their hands before and after patient contact. During patient contact, we will wear gloves.
All patient exam rooms are wiped down with hydrogen peroxide after each use and the room sprayed with Lysol.
Again, all these precautions are being instituted with your safety in mind. I apologize for any inconveniences that may result.
