Our Story
Hollins Communications Research Institute (HCRI) was founded by Ronald L. Webster, Ph.D. in 1972 to investigate stuttering using scientific methods and to develop new treatment approaches. Researchers at Virginia-based HCRI, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, invented the concept of behavioral stuttering therapy. HCRI has become an international leader in stuttering research and treatment innovation. HCRI’s intensive stuttering therapy program last 12 days. Participants work with specially trained clinicians and learn how to retrain speech muscles to produce fluent speech. In addition, HCRI offers a comprehensive package of post-therapy support to help people who stutter maintain fluency for the long term. The HCRI Difference HCRI’s proprietary therapy has been developed in-house by research scientists who are experts in the investigation and treatment of stuttering. Team members have tested and retested HCRI’s therapy system with thousands of people who stutter. This has led to exciting new discoveries, ongoing therapy refinements, and the creation of new treatment tools that enhance fluency outcomes. U.S. patents have been awarded to HCRI for some of these stuttering therapy innovations. HCRI scientists have also created new ways to use technology in therapy that make the learning of lasting fluency skills straightforward and practical. • 93% of program participants acquire fluency by the end of their 12-day treatment program. • 75% retain fluency when evaluated two years post therapy. Clients HCRI clinicians have treated thousands of people from across the U.S. and 50 countries. Clients come from all walks of life and include broadcaster John Stossel of Fox News; Annie Glenn, wife of Senator and Astronaut John Glenn; athletes, teachers, students, doctors, actors, engineers, military personnel, business professionals, a supreme court nominee, police officers, and even royalty. www.stuttering.org | info@stuttering.org | 855-236-7032
