As I celebrate my birthday today, I’m reflecting on a year that’s brought both profound loss and incredible growth. Losing my beloved dog Willow was one of the hardest moments of my life, and I carry her memory with me every day.

At the same time, this past year has been full of forward momentum — graduating from Radford with my Family Nurse Practitioner degree, taking the leap to purchase and rebrand Appalachian Integrative Health, moving into a new space, and continuing to expand the care we offer to our amazing community.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way — patients, colleagues, friends, and family. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to do this work and to be part of such a strong and compassionate community.

Here’s to year 36 — may it be full of purpose, presence, and continued growth.

With gratitude,

Zachary Hurt, FNP-C, ND, LAc

🧠✨ Exploring Acupuncture for Neurological Health ✨🧠

Neurological disorders can deeply affect quality of life, but acupuncture is emerging as a powerful complementary therapy. Rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture helps restore the body’s natural balance and healing by stimulating specific points with thin needles.

Here’s how it can help:
✔️ Pain Relief – Eases headaches, migraines, and nerve pain
✔️ Stroke Recovery – Supports motor function, speech, and cognitive rehab
✔️ Multiple Sclerosis (MS) – Reduces fatigue, stiffness, and bladder issues
✔️ Parkinson’s Disease (PD) – Improves movement, sleep, and mood
✔️ Peripheral Neuropathy – Lessens pain and enhances nerve function

Acupuncture offers a holistic, supportive approach to managing neurological conditions.

How to Prepare for a Vitamin IV: Your Complete Guide

In recent years, vitamin IV therapy has become a popular way to boost overall health, hydrate your body, and recover from intense physical exertion or illnesses. This treatment involves a customized blend of vitamins and minerals that are directly infused into your bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system for more immediate and effective absorption. While it can provide quick relief and replenishment, preparing for a vitamin IV session will help ensure you get the most out of the experience.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to prepare for your vitamin IV treatment to make the process smooth, safe, and effective.

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
One of the most important things to do before your vitamin IV session is to ensure you're well-hydrated. Dehydration can make it harder to insert the IV needle, as your veins may be harder to find or less elastic. Drinking plenty of water, at least 2 large glasses (24 ounces) leading up to your appointment will also ensure that your body is ready to absorb the nutrients quickly and efficiently.

2. Eat Light, But Don’t Skip Meals
Before your session, aim for a light meal that is rich in whole foods and easily digestible, such as a smoothie, salad, or light protein. Having a little food in your stomach can help prevent any potential dizziness or lightheadedness during or after the treatment, as vitamin IVs can sometimes cause a sudden increase in energy. Avoid eating a heavy, greasy meal right before your appointment, as this may lead to an upset stomach or discomfort during the session.

3. Avoid Caffeine
Although a cup of coffee might be a great way to start your day, it’s best to avoid caffeine before your vitamin IV appointment. Caffeine can dehydrate your body, which is the opposite of what you want before an IV treatment. Additionally, caffeine can elevate your heart rate, which might increase the discomfort of the IV insertion or cause feelings of jitteriness when mixed with the influx of nutrients.

4. Wear Comfortable Clothing
Since your IV will likely be administered in your arm, it’s essential to wear clothing that allows easy access to your veins. Opt for a short-sleeve shirt, or something with loose-fitting sleeves, so the nurse or healthcare professional can comfortably administer the IV. A relaxed fit will help you feel more at ease during the procedure, which typically lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

5. Consult with Your Healthcare Provider
Before undergoing any IV therapy, it's crucial to have a conversation with your healthcare provider, especially if you have underlying medical conditions or are currently on medication. They can help assess whether vitamin IV therapy is appropriate for you, suggest the right type of vitamin blend (e.g., hydration boost, classic revive, immune shield), and offer any important advice based on your health needs.

6. Bring a Good Book, Music, or Relaxation Tools
While vitamin IV therapy is relatively painless for most people, the process can take some time, so it’s helpful to bring along a book, music, or something to keep you entertained during your session. If you’re someone who prefers a more relaxing atmosphere, consider bringing noise-canceling headphones or an eye mask for a more meditative experience. Some people even take a nap during their vitamin IV treatment!

7. Know What to Expect During the Session
Your vitamin IV appointment will generally start with a brief consultation to discuss your goals and any health concerns. Afterward, the nurse or technician will prepare the IV solution tailored to your needs, and the IV catheter will be inserted into one of your veins—usually in your arm. The process itself is relatively quick and straightforward, but be sure to let your provider know if you experience any discomfort or issues.

Once the IV drip begins, it will take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour for the solution to be fully administered. You may feel a cooling sensation or a slight discomfort at the site of the insertion, but this is normal and usually temporary.

8. Aftercare: Post-IV Tips
Once your session is complete, there are a few things to keep in mind to help your body process the infusion:

Hydrate more: Drink additional water post-treatment for the next 24-48 hours and at least 2 large glasses (24 ounces) after treatment.

Rest if necessary: Some people feel an energy boost, while others might feel a bit tired. If you're feeling a little off afterward, take it easy for the rest of the day.

Monitor for any side effects: While rare, some people may experience side effects such as swelling, redness, or irritation at the IV site. If you notice any concerning symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.

9. Make It Part of Your Routine
For long-term benefits, some people choose to make vitamin IV therapy a regular part of their wellness routine. It’s a great way to maintain hydration and keep your body’s vitamin and nutrient levels balanced. Talk to your healthcare provider about how often this treatment might be appropriate for you based on your health and lifestyle.

Conclusion
Vitamin IV therapy is a quick, effective way to give your body a boost of essential nutrients and hydration. By following these preparation steps—hydrating, eating a light meal, wearing comfortable clothing, and consulting with your healthcare provider—you can ensure that your session is as comfortable and effective as possible. With the right preparation, you can reap the full benefits of this rejuvenating treatment and feel better than ever afterward!

Surviving the Seasons- The Pollening

Brought to you by Alex Watkins LAc, MSTOM

Spring is Here! Oh NO! 🌸🤧

This week, I woke up to that familiar green-yellow dust covering my car. It’s happening… The Pollening. Pollen in the Roanoke Valley peaks in April and May, but you can already feel it—along with those dreaded allergy symptoms.

Our immune systems are about to spend the next few months treating pollen like an infection, making us feel miserable just when the weather is getting beautiful. But don’t worry! Here are some survival tips to help you through.

🌊 Rinse It Out
Use a neti pot or sinus rinse—it’s not as bad as it sounds! A simple saline rinse helps flush pollen, dust, and mucus out of your sinuses, relieving congestion. I use this regularly, especially after working in the yard. You can find neti pots and saline packets at any drugstore, or grab a bottle version at the clinic.

Hot Tip: If you’re super congested, wait until after a shower when everything is loosened up. And always use distilled or filtered & boiled water!

🌿 Nettles
Nettles are like acupuncture—pokey, but powerful! This weed/herb helps regulate the immune system, calming the reaction to pollen, and ease allergy symptoms. You can find nettle tea in most grocery stores, or if your allergies are more intense, Sinuplex (available at the clinic) contains a powerful blend of herbs, including nettles.

😴 Rest Up
Your immune system is working overtime (bless its heart 💕), even though it’s fighting the wrong thing. Make sure you get enough rest to help your body recover. Even just a little extra sleep or downtime can make a big difference in how you feel.

🚫 Reduce Exposure

⏰ Timing: Pollen counts are highest midday and into the afternoon. If you want to enjoy the outdoors, go early in the morning or later in the evening. (Bonus: It’s also better for avoiding the heat and most intense UV rays)

😷 Filtration: Wear a mask when doing yard work, and use HEPA filters in your HVAC system, vacuum, and air purifiers to help keep pollen out of your space.

Spring is gorgeous, but allergies don’t have to ruin it. With a few simple steps, you can still enjoy the season! 🌷✨

And if you need extra support, the team at AIH is here to help:

See Beth for an Immune Boost IV or shot.

Work with Zac for a Soliman Auricular Allergy Treatment (SAAT), a specialized ear-acupuncture treatment for allergies and histamine production.

Try acupuncture with Alex for some points that will help re-calibrate the immune response and reduce symptoms.

🍃🌱🍃Getting Through to Spring: 5 Tips for Keeping Your Mood Up

Written by Alex Watkins, MSTOM, LAc

By East Asian standards, we’re in early spring (aka Second Winter). I know—it’s sleeting, there’s snow on the ground, and it doesn’t feel like spring. But underground, plants are stirring, bugs are coming to life, and animals are becoming more active. Maybe you’re feeling that energy, too.

In East Asian Medicine, spring is the Wood season—growth, direction, and renewal. But we aren’t quite there yet. Right now, we’re in that awkward dance between the stasis of winter and the movement of spring. This transition can actually make your mood worse before it gets better, a rough time for people who experience seasonal depression. Maybe you’re feeling crankier, colder, more lethargic—or just fully blah.
Here are some simple ways to make it through:

☀️ Get Some Vitamin D
Lay in the sun like a cat. Vitamin D levels tend to drop during the dark months, so soaking up some sunshine can help. You can also boost your levels with foods like eggs, tuna, oily fish, and fortified dairy or non-dairy products (look for “with Vitamin D” on the label). Not sure if you’re low? Zac offers lab tests to check if supplementation would be a good fit.

😎 Forget the Sunglasses (Sometimes)
Take advantage of natural light—open the blinds, get outside when you can, and skip the sunglasses when possible. Sunlight in your eyes boosts serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for mood regulation.

🚶‍♀️ Gentle Movement
Get that energy moving in your system, not stagnating and making you cranky. On nicer days, take a 20-minute walk and combine tips #1 & #2. Try some gentle yoga (No classes with “power,” “hot,” or “bootcamp” in the title). Yoga with Adriene on YouTube is a great home-practice option. And if you still want to cocoon on the couch afterward? That’s fine, too.

🧣 Stay Cozy
Even as it starts to warm up, don’t rush to ditch your jacket. It is not shorts weather yet. A light jacket or scarf can help keep your circulation strong and your body warm during this transition.

🌬️ Breathe & Tune In
We can’t flip a switch from winter to spring—nature slowly awakens, and so do we. On tough days, remind yourself: This isn’t forever. A simple way to check in is to pause, take a deep breath in and release slowly, and ask: What do I need right now? Then honor that, whether it’s rest, movement, or something else.

And if you need extra support, the team at AIH is here to help:
See Beth for a Classic Revive IV Cocktail packed with B vitamins to lift your energy.
Work with Zac to address any underlying deficiencies through holistic wellness visits.
Try acupuncture with Alex—there are treatments designed specifically for this seasonal transition.

Next up: The Pollening! 🌸
