Been thinking about 2025 goals. I’ve been racing since the 8th grade (28 years 😱) & there aren’t many novel racing experiences left. I felt a bit comfortable w/ my 2024 pursuits so that means the cage needs to be rattled. Grandmas marathon on the docket for 2025 (pumped!) but I’m still searching for something scarier. ? Ultras? U.S. Masters track and/or XC champs? Gonna pick one- which should it be?

Lots of time in the woods this fall & it’s been fantastic. Countless 4am alarms, numerous camping wknds, less investment in fitness, & one of my great yearly resets on the phone/technology front. A more simple way of living to be honest. It’s also the most quality time I spend w/ every year & it’s something I’m so dang lucky to share w/ my partner. More time in the woods to come this season but a shift back to run fitness is on the horizon.

Most of you reading this are so burnt to a crisp & you don’t even realize it… thus my semi-annual reminder to take a damn break! If you’re inconsistent w/ your training this post isn’t for you. However, if you’re the disciplined human I know you are & you’re training consistently & w/ purpose, true breaks roughly twice per year from training of 7-10 IS A MUST. Stay available. Stay hungry. Allow the hard training/racing to soak in. Trust that rest is indeed the path to improvement, especially if you’re consistent in your training.

It’s about damn time! Officially registered for Grandma’s Marathon next year. I find myself leaning into the sharp & stingy side of racing more than the grind but the marathon has continued to gnaw at me. I don’t particularly enjoy long miles on the roads but I do enjoy riding the razors edge- the marathon is the perfect place to test that. What’s your time prediction?

A 2 year quest came to an end last night! This big woods public land buck was 1 of my 2 MN targets & to figure him out in the big woods taught me how to rethink hunting mature deer. Learned all I could about him last year and built on that knowledge this season. Snuck in & set up 40yds from his bed & the rest is history. The best part is experiencing this all w/ my wife . An evening that will not soon be forgotten!

If you’re not constantly building peak fitness you’re slacking. WRONG. Attempting to be in peak race shape year round is an impossible task- there’s a time to build, a time to maintain, and (gasp) a time to even regress a bit. What I know is those who are all gas and no brakes are good… but seldom great. Want to perform your best? Aim for 2 fitness peaks per year with 2 bouts of maintenance and 2 bouts of rest (or as some might see it… regression). Rest, build, maintain (usually occurring mid-racing season). Rinse and repeat twice per year. As for me? I’m pursuing my other passions this fall (aka .deer.hunting ) so am in build phase with very little spicy work but plenty of grindier/threshold work. No need to hammer all year to knock your running out of the park- cycle through phases and you’ll perform well when it really matters.

The equivalent of Christmas Eve in the DeWindt household: archery opener! Bow season opens tomorrow in both MN & WI and we’ll be chasing whitetails the majority of this next week. Have a handful of true public land giants to chase. Also, have a new account dedicated solely to my deer hunting pursuits - .deer.hunting where I’ll honestly be way more active in this fall as I’m buried deep in the woods.

Muscle or speed? Are they mutually exclusive? How much of one thing takes away from the other? I ask myself these questions a lot. Same engine, lighter car- is that the formula? Or is it this very strength that keeps me healthy enough to train w/ purpose at 41? The answer may not be clear but I’d be lying if I said I don’t waffle over this on occasion. When you’re trying to thread the needle on a time goal you become granular w/ your analysis & this is what it usually boils down to for me. In one sense there’s a good bit of pride being 5 yrs older and 20lbs heavier than anyone else in the field, on the other hand it’s easy to wonder if I’m leaving time on the table based on the above. Ohh the joys of splitting hairs in the endurance space. Either way this sh*t fills my cup so the foot will remain to the flame!

My old man is 70! Pete has been active as long as I can remember & doesn’t have to hesitate at the thought of doing anything physical. Jumped off the pontoon, swam w/ the kids, & fished tirelessly. Consistency pays off folks! Happy birthday, Dad! (Who’s never going to see this 😂).

Next up: chasing 14:xx in the 5k. My stay power feels solid in the longer distances, now time to whittle it down for an honest stab at breaking 15 on the track in August. The higher turnover work feels slightly harder earned these days but that’s what makes this pursuit so damn fun.

If you don’t always have the words, lead by example- something I do my best to live by. Maybe I’m getting introspective at 40+, but continuing to pursue performance metrics feels like it holds more weight than it used to… and chasing these goals makes me feel ALIVE. Motivated as ever to press my limits after Grandmas 1/2 last wknd- next up is Afton 25k in a week & then onto chasing sub 15 in the 5k! 😤

Grandmas 1/2 marathon is up next! It’s been 7 years since I’ve raced on the roads… seven damn years! How on earth has it been that long?😱 OCR had my exclusive focus for years, from there I pivoted to the trails & self induced road time trials, & recently a few cracks at the 5k on the track… but my last official road race was in 2017. Funny enough I still feel most at home on the roads clicking along rhythmically & am PUMPED to see where I’m at in such an objective distance. I have some big time goals for this one, what’s your prediction?!
