Rudy says ‘stay inside!’ If you have to go out, be sure you take the appropriate precautions to prevent frost bite!

☃️☃️☃️

Here are some tips to staying warm:
1) Keep yourself dry! Make sure you wear moisture wicking clothes as well as waterproof gloves and boots.
2) Make sure no snow can get inside your boots. If your socks get wet, change them immediately.
3) Avoid cotton socks — cotton can actually absorb water and make you colder.
4) If you feel you might have frostbite, seek medical attention immediately! Most importantly, do not walk on frost bitten feet or rub the area as this could cause further damage!
5) Avoid putting your feet on or near radiators, space heaters, or fires, especially if you have neuropathy, to prevent severe burns.

☃️☃️☃️

Snow is best enjoyed inside with a good book and some hot chocolate! Enjoy the day, everyone!

Playing with some more padding today! This time for a distal tip callus in an elderly patient with a hammertoe deformity. These pads are comfortable, easy to use, and extremely useful for removing excess pressure from toe calluses and ulcers in non-surgical patients.

It’s important to keep pressure off of high pressure areas, especially in diabetics, to prevent skin breakdown and ulceration which could lead to infection.

Keep your feet healthy by visiting your podiatrist! Give us a call today to make an appointment, we’re happy to see you!

Don’t be like Gingy this winter! Here are some tips for walking safely when it’s icy out to decrease the risk of falls!

❄️❄️

1. Walk like a penguin! Waddling rather than regular walking helps keep your center of gravity over your front legs and keep you standing upright.
2. Take small steps and walk at a slower pace.
3. Keep your hands out of your pockets. This will help with balance.
4. Wear sturdy shoes and boots that support your ankles and have good traction.
5. Use a handrail when using stairs.
6. Stay on designated walkways and areas that have been shoveled. Make sure to shovel snow immediately, before it becomes packed down and turns to ice.
7. Use care when getting into and out of cars. Use the car as support.

❄️❄️

Stay safe this winter! Give us a call with any questions or concerns you might have!

Incredibly exciting news today! While the vaccine is not going to cure the pandemic, it is most certainly a step in the right direction. There is hope that our healthcare workers (those to first get the vaccine), who have worked so selflessly and tirelessly throughout this scary, trying time, will now be able to do their jobs with a little more security and less worry.

Please inform yourself about the vaccine before being quick to judge against it. Read what the scientists are saying and ask questions. Think about your grandparents, elderly neighbors, sick relatives, etc. We’re all responsible and we’re all in this together.

It’s Fun Footwear Friday!

🧤🧦⛸

Today we’re talking about ice skates! Not originally used for entertainment, skates were initially used as a mode of transportation across frozen lakes and land in Finland. The first version of an ice skate was animal bones strapped to shoes. It was only in the 13th century that the metal blade arrived.

🧣🧤⛸

When looking for the right ice skate, keep in mind that they should fit snugly but you should have room to wiggle your toes. If the skate is too loose, you risk spraining your ankle or more!

Let’s talk Athlete’s Foot! That pesky red, itchy skin between your toes might not just be dry skin but could be caused by a fungus.
🦶🏼🦶🏼
It’s important to protect your feet from fungus by wearing sandals or flip flops in public places (like at a public pool, in the gym locker room or shower, in a dorm shower etc.), keeping your feet dry with breathable socks and washing your feet with soap and water and drying them thoroughly daily.
🦶🏼🦶🏼
If you think you might have athlete’s foot, come on in for an appointment and we’ll be happy to determine the best treatment for you!

Fun Footwear Friday!
👡👡
Today we’re talking about the pointe shoe! The pointe shoe was designed to mimic the effects of the ‘flying machine’, a machine that enabled ballet dancers to lift upward and dance on their toes to make the dance look effortless. The modern day pointe shoe as we know it was created by Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova in the early 20th century. Interestingly, there is no right or left shoe — they are interchangeable!
👡👡
Though beautiful, they do wreak havoc on the toes of the dancers, which is where podiatry comes into play! With appropriate padding and strapping techniques, as well as treatment of blisters and calluses, we can help keep ballerinas as healthy as possible.

With the number of coronavirus cases increasing, we understand it might be scary for some to come to a doctor’s office. We just wanted to share with you a few extra ways we’re keeping our staff and patients safe during this tough time.

👣👣

- All patients are pre-screened on the phone and in person before entering the office
- All staff and patients have their temperatures taken on arrival to the office
- We have added new air flow units to each room to allow air to recycle more than once per minute
- All surfaces are sanitized before and between each patient
- All staff and patients are required to wear appropriate PPE at all times
In addition to all of our usual practices!

We’re happy to talk to you about any concerns you may have and are happy to see you!

Let’s talk bones!

👣👣

Did you know that the bones in your feet make up 25% of the bones in your body? This is why it’s so important to wear appropriately fitting shoes, accommodate for any structural issues, and pay special attention when performing athletics to prevent fractures or dislocations of your bones.

👣👣

At BRFAS we provide conservative and surgical treatment for fractures and dislocations to get you back on your feet faster! Give us a call to set up an appointment!

Rufus is a perfect example of how to take care of your feet in the rain and snow — with rain boots!

Your feet don’t like to be wet, but fungus does. Avoid wet soggy feet by wearing water proof shoes, wearing socks that dry quickly (like wool blend instead of cotton), and drying out your shoes and socks if they do get wet.

For any foot care questions, call to make an appointment! We’re happy to see you!

It’s Fun Footwear Friday!

The first high heels weren’t meant for females! They were originally developed to help male Persian cavalry keep their shoes in their stirrups. The first female to wear a high heel was Catherine de Medici in the 16th century. Their styles have definitely evolved throughout the years!

November is National Diabetes Month! For Diabetics, good foot care is particularly important to avoid wounds, infections, hospitalizations, amputations and more.

If you have Diabetes it’s important to:
1) Check your feet for openings, signs of infection, or foreign bodies daily.
2) Wear supportive, appropriately fitting shoes to prevent blisters and cuts.
3) Wear shoes at all times to prevent stepping on something and not noticing.
4) Moisturize but avoid the webspaces.
5) Have your feet checked by a podiatrist at least twice a year.
For more information and to make sure you’re on top of your foot health, give us a call to make an appointment!
