Pregnancy isn’t always a basket of spring sunshine and a warm breeze. It changes the body and mind. iIt’s a liminal space between not being a parent and being a parent. Or being a parent to a newborn again. It’s a huge dynamic shift and it can be utterly exhausting. Not to mention nausea, ligament pain, back pain, poor sleep, dietary changes, finding proper care and support, planning for postpartum and on and on it goes! It’s important to slow down, take some tine, bring joy to your life in small ways.

A little reintroduction!
I’m Ash, a doula. What’s up! I like stuff. I like supporting people, chatting, having coffee. I care, I’m empathetic, I have anxiety and grief. I buy books, read books, buy journals, write. I hyper-fixate and think it’s a great time. Oh the kettle boiled! Ta ta!

Sometimes things move too swiftly to understand. It starts with a sensation, suddenly the water breaks and then you’re screaming your way to the hospital. Sometimes things move too quickly and the intensity is hard to adjust to. But, we all get there, we set the atmosphere right, we remain calm and a beautifull brith is had. I’m so proud of them, they kicked major ass. Many joyful tears dampened the baby’s blanket along with thick vernix and baby p*e. Oh what a ride.

A birthday shared with my mom! ❤️

Pre e can really challenge and complicate things. From early indications, to magnesium, to on and on it goes. It makes the sense of control feel fleeting, the positive experience crumble as more and more interventions pile on. But, we do the best we can. We remain supportive, we give info, demand informed consent, understand choices, risks, benefits. Every choice that’s made is one surrounded by understanding, no judgement, and support.

Just about every intervention and augmentation, all the things they didn’t want, but talking about it 16 hours after the baby was born and saying that they didn’t find the experience traumatic, is everything! Because I know that those things would have been traumatic if they didn’t understand their choices, if they didn’t advocate for themselves, if it felt like@it was happening TO them. It was their birth and they felt in control. Did they get pressure to do certain things? Absolutely. Did we talk about those things and did they make informed choices? 100%!

I know this was a tough journey, it was not all sunshine and rainbows, feeling good, or lots of excitement. But, it was still full of strong understanding and decision making. I am so proud of this family!
