I’m traveling this week and since we drove, I brought my favorite pillow. I’m at the age where I need a comfortable bed and pillow for a good night sleep away from home.
Do you suffer from poor sleep when you travel (bed- too hard, too soft, laying flat, pillows- too soft, too hard, too flat?!

I’m spoiled because we have independent adjustable beds so I can elevate my head a bit to alleviate any snoring. Doubling up on pillows puts a kink in my neck and offers no additional benefit or comfort.

Counting down the days to sleep in my own bed but I love 💗 to travel!!

I discuss sleep study test results with patients almost daily and how every night of recording can be different based on so many factors. Room temperature, noises, bed partners, stress from work, school, or family, consuming alcohol or caffeine before bedtime and medications may affect how you sleep. One night of sleep is not a complete picture! Additionally, home sleep tests are not comprehensive like an In Lab PSG. A Home Sleep Test (HST) is a great screening tool but if it’s not conclusive you should consider an in lab monitored test if you continue having poor sleep and other related health conditions.

Obstructive sleep apnea has major cardiometabolic and neurocognitive consequences and is estimated to affect up to 1 billion people worldwide.

Do you work night shift?

“Working a night shift impacts body, mind, and sleep. It has been shown to increase inflammation, cortisol levels, and metabolic syndrome," shared Dr. Kevin Postol, President-Elect of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, in a recent Sleepopolis article.

To minimize the effects of working at night on the mind and body, Dr. Postol recommended:

“Eating healthier and trying not to shift back and forth between sleeping days is important. Also, when you do sleep, try to ensure you get more than seven hours and that you are getting quality sleep. If you are snoring or find yourself gasping for air when you do sleep, you may have obstructive sleep apnea.”
