THERAPIST SPOTLIGHT!

For our current Aloe blog, we decided to interview some of our therapists so you can get to know them better. Here is a sneak preview of our first interview with our very own Cassiann procenko!

Q: What are you most passionate about in your work?

I am passionate about walking beside clients of all ages as they reconnect with their sense of self, inner calm, and strength. Whether my client is a child struggling with anxiety, a teen overwhelmed by identity or school stress, or an adult unraveling old beliefs, I love helping people rediscover what a sense of safety can feel like.

These are difficult times, with many recent added stressors. And while some things are out of our control and divides can seem bigger than ever, one of the things we can control is how we choose to cope.

Utilizing healthy coping skills can foster resilience. During times of stress it is important to not only utilize healthy and practical coping skills, but also to engage in acts of self-care.

Although self-care can often be seen as a luxury we can’t always afford, such as a vacation, going to a spa, spending money on a nice meal or a special event, in truth self-care can simply be small acts of caring kindness we bestow upon ourselves.

Acts of self-kindness can include giving ourselves grace and time to reflect during stressful moments, days, or weeks. Sometimes it means reaching out for support from your community, taking 5 minutes to engage in something relaxing (e.g. playing music or a quick breathing exercise) or even giving yourself some time to “shut off” and engage in a distraction for a set amount of time (e.g. watching funny videos or reading a book). Even spending a few minutes writing a list of 5 things you can be grateful for, can help to find some hope and light in what might feel heavy and dark.

During difficult times it can be hard to figure out what to say to the kids. When talking with kids about traumatic events, here are a few guidelines:

1. Refrain from watching the news or discussing the traumatic event in front of younger children when possible. In general kids will let you know when they are ready to talk about difficult things. Talking about it too much can traumatize them further.

2. Try to deliver information in an age appropriate manner. 1-2 sentences is best. Don't overexplain. Answer questions in 1-2 sentences and wait for them to process. Let them know you're here to answer anymore questions they might have. They will have a follow up question if they are ready for more.

3. Remind kids of safety procedures. Deliver that message in a calm tone. Just like adults, kids want the ability to do something when they are scared. Knowing what to do when something scary happens is far more empowering than just believing the bad thing won't happen.

4. Especially for older kids, remind them to fact check before spreading rumors. Don't click on links such as for body cam footage as they are usually fake. Beware of go fund me accounts that are not verified. Teach them where and how to find confirmed reports and accurate information.

5. Remind them they are loved. While the world can sometimes be scary, it isn't always scary. Show them how the community comes together to support each other when things are hard or scary.

6. When in doubt, contact a therapist or child specialist to help you navigate these difficult topics.
