Total knee replacement is a very successful treatment for knee arthritis but can still be a daunting procedure for many patients to consider.

Over the past several weeks we asked Dr. DeClaire to explain knee replacement surgery in more detail, so that you could hear first-hand how he explains it to his patients.

As a knee replacement specialist, a big focus of Dr. DeClaire's practice and what he's done over the years has centered around minimally invasive methods of surgery to achieve the most optimal outcome for patients in the least invasive way.

Minimally invasive surgery means much smaller incisions than the 10-12 inch incisions that are made in traditional knee replacement surgery.

It also spares the muscle and the tendon, which controls bending of the knee, from being cut.

Because of smaller incisions, this means less tissues are cut, resulting in quicker healing and recovery.

Summer is here, and it’s time to enjoy the great outdoors!

But for those living with knee pain, getting outside to walk, hike, or just enjoy your day might seem like a challenge. We know it’s not easy, especially if you’re unsure whether knee replacement surgery is the next step for you.

If you’re still contemplating surgery as your next step, we’ve got some helpful tips to keep you moving this summer while protecting your knees:

1️⃣ Stretch before you walk: Prepare your muscles to reduce strain on your knees.
2️⃣ Strengthen your knees: Swimming, cycling, or using an elliptical machine can help you stay active and build strength.
3️⃣ Start slowly: Gradually increase your walking distance; there’s no need to rush.
4️⃣ Ice your knees: If you feel pain or swelling, ice can help reduce inflammation and keep you comfortable.
5️⃣ Use anti-inflammatory meds: Over-the-counter options like ibuprofen can ease knee discomfort.

But if knee pain lingers and limits your daily activities, it may be time to start your journey toward relief.
