Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
If you did not hear about this field of medicine yet, there are several reasons that may explain that; one is that the core training of a Physiatrist is focused on restoring function after an injury or illness, that leaves almost all training programs affiliated with large academic institutions and Universities, however, both the University of South Carolina-USC-and the Medical University of South Carolina -MUSC– do not even offer the training as it is difficult to recruit physicians in the field because there are relatively few across the nation. Rehabilitation physicians are nerve, muscle, bone and brain experts who treat injury or illness non surgically to decrease pain and restore function. Throughout the years the field expanded further and encompassed several subspecialties including Pain medicine, Spine Care, MusculoskeletalMedicine, Brain injury Medicine, Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, Stroke Rehabilitation Medicine, Orthopedic Rehabilitation Care.
