Diabetes and Gum (Periodontal) Disease

Periodontitis and diabetes have a two-way relationship, wherein each condition can adversely affect the other:

Diabetes Increases the Risk of Periodontitis:

Individuals with diabetes are approximately three times more likely to develop periodontitis compared to those without the condition. Poorly controlled diabetes can result in elevated blood sugar levels in saliva, which fosters the accumulation of plaque and bacteria. Furthermore, diabetes may lead to decreased saliva production, increasing the risk of tooth decay.

Periodontitis Complicates Diabetes Management:

Infections stemming from untreated periodontitis can elevate blood sugar levels. Additionally, individuals with diabetes and severe periodontitis face a heightened risk of cardiovascular and renal complications, including cardiorenal mortality, macroalbuminuria, and end-stage renal disease.

Although the precise mechanisms underlying this relationship are not fully elucidated, they may involve factors such as immune response, cytokine activity, and neutrophil function.

Periodontitis is recognized as the most prevalent and severe oral health issue associated with diabetes. If left untreated, it can progress from gingival inflammation to tooth loss.

The connections between periodontitis and diabetes have been extensively documented in various studies, confirming that uncontrolled diabetes significantly heightens the risk of developing periodontitis.
