HeartWorks

HeartWorks HeartWorks is a nonprofit creating outcomes & opportunities for the 1 in 100 born with CHD. Together, we're building a better future for CHD.

We advance research, lead clinical trials, and offer ways to support our mission. Together, WE BUILD HEARTS. HeartWorks was created in June, 2020 to accelerate and expand the product development pioneered by the Todd and Karen Wanek Family Program for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), founded at Mayo Clinic in 2010. The HLHS program has formed a nationwide research consortium and developed c

ell-based therapeutics to treat CHD, some of which are currently in clinical trials. The HLHS program’s team of physicians, scientists, and engineers have a combined average of nearly 30 years of experience across their respective disciplines and have focused this expertise on treatments for the most severe forms of CHD, thereby furthering advanced research in genetics, stem cell biology, clinical trials, and cell-based manufacturing. The team developed a platform that enables multiple cell-based clinical trials to be conducted simultaneously in collaboration with a consortium of world class medical institutions. HeartWorks will expand the HLHS program product pipeline and grow its ecosystem of partners to scale up development of new CHD therapies, clinical trials, and product launches. Our ecosystem is a critical component of our success. All of our partners believe in and actively support our vision of transformative product development for the CHD community. We will engender trust with our benefactors, CHD children and families, and partner institutions by sharing data and outcomes at a level not possible before within individual institutions. We will share our successes together.

Celebrating the graduation of the HLHS Program at Mayo Clinic and the full commitment to the HeartWorks platform.

Fifteen years ago, this journey began with a commitment to children affected by congenital heart disease and the belief that progress for CHD families could move faster. Together, we helped bring CHD to the forefront of regenerative medicine and launched groundbreaking clinical trials once thought impossible.

Today marks the next chapter.

HeartWorks is going all in on a pathway toward cures for congenital heart disease: accelerating clinical trials, advancing autologous stem cell research, building new surgical training pathways, and creating infrastructure designed specifically for CHD innovation.

To every family who participated in research, contributed biospecimens, shared data, or believed in this mission: thank you. We work for YOU and we will continue moving forward together at the speed of trust.

This movement is bigger than a person, an institution and our past limitations.

No excuses. Let’s go.

What makes HeartWorks different?

Often, donations made to large foundations support broad initiatives or are distributed across many different research efforts.

At HeartWorks, donations directly support the work happening inside our own labs, manufacturing spaces, and programs - all focused specifically on congenital heart disease.

We’re building therapies, technologies, and manufacturing systems in house with one goal: improving outcomes for the nearly 40,000 babies born with CHD each year in the U.S. ONE beat and ONE dollar at a time.

PS - This is Parallel Heart, one of our products in the works. It is a biological conduit made of a patient’s own cells designed to improve blood flow to the lungs.

Every dollar stays within HeartWorks and helps move the mission forward faster.

1 in 100 babies are born with congenital heart disease and every one of them deserves 100% of our attention.

That’s why HeartWorks exists. To push boundaries, build what’s next, and work toward changing outcomes for incredible kids like this.

30 hours of cell growth…in just a few seconds.

What you’re seeing are stem cell colonies growing and expanding over time. These cells are special because they can eventually be guided to become different types of cells, including heart cells.

In the lab, we typically only get a quick glimpse of these colonies once a day. This time-lapse gives us a rare, close-up look at how they grow, expand, and form over time.

Heart building is mind blowing ♥️✨
