I’m all about celebrating father’s who are showing up. Our world needs to see more fathers who are physically and emotionally present, nurturing and sharing in the mental load of parenting.

What is not helpful to empowering fathers as equal and competent parents is when we celebrate dad’s who are just doing normal parenthood stuff. Stuff like: taking and picking kids up from school, going grocery shopping with kids, going to events solo with kids and so much more. These things need to be normalized so much more than they are. And I think we’d all be better for it🤍What would you add to this list?

And truly, happy Father’s Day to the dads showing up and being present and involved parents.

“You’re such a good mom” my neighbor yelled and immediately it made me tear up. It was an ordinary winter day, several years ago now. I was pulling both kids on a sled since they didn’t want to be outside and I did, I called it I didn’t realize how much I needed to hear those words until I was teary eyed, trudging down my street on a 25 degree day.

It made me think of how little validation there can be in the day to day of motherhood. How we crave someone to notice us and let us know we’re doing a good job. It’s so easy to get caught in what’s not working, how you’re failing, how other moms seem to be doing “better” than you.

There will always be room for growth: growth happens from nurture, from compassion, from recognizing your strengths. If no one has told you, you’re doing a good job, let this be your reminder. I hope YOU can give yourself that encouragement not just today but everyday💛

“Why are you here?!” I heard that a lot in Alabama when folks found out we were from New York. Apparently they don’t see many of us New Yorkers. There’s nothing to do here, I heard from our jet ski guide right before we went out on a beautiful night to look for dolphins….the irony of this was not lost on me😅

It made me think about how often we overlook what we have to offer. We take for granted our spaces, our gifts, our growth. This was a reminder to me about being more mindful of what I have to offer the world and not discrediting it because it’s my norm.

The classic therapist answer to this question is “it depends”😆Scroll through for a more nuanced exploration.

Having a public social media platform for therapists is still the wild, Wild West in terms of ethics. We are navigating best practices, how to be clear with clients about boundaries without much if any guidance from graduate programs and licensing boards.

Therapists and clients, I would love to hear what you’d add in the comments 🤍

Why am I sharing this? I thought a lot about whether or not to post this. It’s more personal than what I normally share. Here’s why I decided to share it:

~it normalizes that therapy is a journey, it often takes trial and error to find what works
~I hope it helps someone else out a voice to what they’ve felt and maybe help someone make a shift in their own therapy
~I want to highlight how to be compassionate to younger versions of myself. Regret is a teacher, it has helped me define my values. It does not need to lead to shame and criticism.

I would welcome your thoughts and feedback in the comments 🫶🫶

It’s been a LONG time since I’ve done an introduction post. For the first time in over a year, I’ve had positive growth on this account. The algorithm does not reward my healthy boundaries and long breaks but that’s ok. Anyways here I go, hi, hello. I’m Alaina (ah-lay-na) I’ve had my name misspelled and mispronounced for years so I try where I can to set the record straight.

I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist and so much more. I strive to share authentically here. That doesn’t mean I share everything, it means what I share comes from a genuine place and feels like the right fit for this space. Scroll through these disclaimers where I share more about what to expect, my boundaries, clients following me and more. And say hi in the comments 🤍

Here’s an evergreen therapy theme⬆️

Maybe you’re not broken or terrible, maybe you’re a human.

I have found most people find it hard to give themselves space to be human. We live in a culture that gives us countless messages of how we can be doing more, achieving more, being more efficient. And it leads to anxiety, discontent, feeling like you’re not enough.

Here’s a thought: maybe you’re not doing it wrong, maybe you’re human. Maybe the messages surrounding you are impossible standards that no one can achieve.
What do you think? Do you need to give yourself more space to be human?

We don’t talk enough about ending therapy and it’s such a valuable conversation. Therapy doesn’t have to be forever. For lots of folks it works best in episodes, for certain seasons of life. What are your signs that it’s time to wrap up therapy?

*this conversation is assuming you have had a mostly positive experience with your therapist. An unhelpful or harmful experience with your therapist is a whole different conversation *
