Best of luck to Mike Minnehan as he continues to prepare in the off season, for his upcoming senior golf season at Old Dominion. Mike struggled through recent golf seasons with hip pain due to hip femoroacetabular impingement and labral pathology. After arthroscopic hip surgery, Mike anticipates to come back to the game, with significant improvements in pain and motion. "Thanks to Dr. Giordano and all the staff at URMC I am able to play pain free for the first time in two years. It has brought me an immense amount of joy to play the game I love again."

During pregnancy, 50% of women are affected by lumbopelvic pain. 37% of women experience symptoms lasting beyond 3 months postpartum. Appropriate core and hip strengthening with a physical therapist can reduce these symptoms and help return to activities including running.

As fall brings the excitement of returning to school, and current employees are working extra-hard to compensate for school bus driver shortages, it is important to highlight the valuable contributions of our school bus drivers and entire transportation team. Arthroscopic hip surgery can limit your activity for months, which can be frustrating for athletes. With use of an anti-gravity treadmill, which can reduce the body weight forces on the hip during running by up to 80%, athletes are able to initiate a running program as soon as 8 weeks post op, compared to 12 weeks on land. Audrey LeBlanc has used an anti-gravity treadmill to successfully transition back to running after hip surgery, in preparation for her upcoming soccer season. "This experience at URMC has help me enjoy running again", Audrey says.

This week, Dr Giordano performed an arthroscopic surgery to restore blood supply, remove dead bone, and promote healing through the use of stem cells, in young female healthcare worker that has been suffering with debilitating pain for over two years.

Thanks to minimally invasive techniques and regenerative biologic technologies, we anticipate her pain will be reduced and she will be able to return to physical activities she enjoys!

Safe travels to Dr Giordano as he flies home today, after a quick trip to create educational materials that will help surgeons improve their techniques, and allow patients to better understand “what goes on” during an arthroscopic hip procedure.

Following her hip surgery, Jean performed rehab with PT, Melissa, via telehealth from her home in Vermont. Months out from surgery, Jean has returned to the physical activities that hip pain was keeping her from, and feels her surgery and rehab has been a success! Way to go Jean! And thank you Melissa for accommodating her from many many miles away!

Congratulations to Dr. Ben Kuhns on his acceptance to the Steadman Philippon Research Institute - Orthopaedic Research - Hip Preservation Fellowship​, with Dr. Marc Philippon and Dr. Joel Matta from 2022-2023. Dr. Kuhns has been actively involved in the UR Medicine Hip Preservation Program throughout his residency. In addition to continuing to develop his surgical technique, during 2021-2022 Dr. Kuhns plans to continue his work in basic science research, particularly, evaluating the relationship between osteoarthritis and FAI.
