🔬 From AI-powered drug discovery to regenerative therapies, Mayo Clinic researchers made major strides in 2025 toward predicting, preventing, and treating complex disease.

One radiology breakthrough is transforming dense breast cancer screening. Nearly half of women in the U.S. have dense breast tissue, which can make cancers harder to detect on mammograms alone. Mayo Clinic researchers found that combining molecular breast imaging (MBI) with a 3D mammogram more than doubles cancer detection in dense breast tissue.

“Our research focuses on detecting the most lethal cancers earlier—when we have the greatest chance to save lives,” says Carrie Hruska, Ph.D., lead author of the study.

Dr. Ekert, a Mayo Clinic Florida Research Fellow mentored by Erik Middlebrooks, M.D., has been awarded the 2025 Trainee Research Grant from the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR) for her project, “7T Hippocampal Subfield Imaging as a Biomarker of Seizure Lateralization and Cognitive Outcomes in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.”
