While the holiday season can be filled with happy moments and cheer for some, it can also be a tough time for others. Please take time to be kind to yourself.

Take a couple of minutes to read our recent blog post about the importance of self-care, especially during this winter season.

Self-Care has become a bit of a buzzword over the past few years, and really saw a spike in its use during the pandemic. Many have come out in support of this to the point of commercialization, Black Friday sales promoting the latest safe-care items when really the process and approach is so much si...

35 Days past the Winter Solstice and slowly heading into Spring. This is the hardest time of year in Rochester. Many of the days are gloomy and overcast. For many of us who grew up here, in spite of how familiar this time of year may be, we still struggle with feeling low. So, pull out your candles, watch your favorite funny movie, bake something that smells yummy, and call a friend to chat. I promise it will get better, so hang in there, the days are gradually becoming longer.

First Annual Creative Arts ShowCase a Smashing Success

The Creative Arts ShowCase held last night at the Mental Health Association was awesome! We had over 60 attendees, 9 performers of poetry and music, and 30 submissions of art which included various forms such as quilts, paint, and material. The event was a testament that the journey of recovery from mental illness may be challenging, but it is possible. We celebrate everyone who is walking that journey, and offer them hope and inspiration. Although there are dark days, remember the sun comes up again and brings light to show a path that may have been hidden.

Fearless Travels!!
Some you might know that I enjoy camping in the summer. As I sit wrapped in a blanket looking at the snow outside my window, I am reading a camping magazine and dreaming of warm weather. The editor ended her commentary with the following, “Wishing you fearless travels and extraordinary discoveries”. This made me pause. If we could embrace our life with this sentiment, I wonder how much more successful we would be at coping with all the changes and shifts that we face every day. Think about this: to be fearless in our travels implies we are brave and courageous. I admit I do not always feel brave when traveling down a new road. To be brave means we remember the skills we possess and tools we have to fight off danger. My challenge to you is to be brave. You have come a long way and have learned so much. You are brave. And the rewards for being brave are extraordinary discoveries! Whether your new road is a job change, a new relationship, or tackling a new project, may you have fearless travels!

Happy Monday. I have come across a site called "Ten Percent Happier"...here is an excerpt from their latest post.
I am hoping this inspires all of us to "take a moment" and consider how we live in this world.
Have a great week!

Meditation teaches us how to cultivate a still, inner space that enables us to respond wisely to life, instead reacting, often mindlessly, to it. We’ve probably all experienced this at times, this non-reactive space, this caring quality that can afford us another perspective on our lives, and the possibility of an ethical relationship that's not driven by getting what we want and getting rid of what we don't like. It's a quality of mind that wise people from all different walks of life and traditions intuitively understand. It’s when we experience our lives in a way that's not determined by what we want and what we don't want, that’s not all about me.

You may have heard meditation called a “practice.” As in, “I practice mindfulness.” “I practice Zen.” And so on. But this alone is a very narrow understanding of practice. Really, the point of practicing meditation is to practice being human: the way we see ourselves and the world, the w...

"Quality of life": the day by day feelings, attitude and approach we take with us every day. Quality of life can get lost in planning for the future, grieving for the past, and reacting to a crisis. Each decision made throughout the day contributes to our quality of life.
Maintaining perspective and taking a moment to pause helps us to make decision that provide a healthy and positive quality of life. If you are faced with a difficult decision, take a moment to pause and consider how the outcome will impact you today and tomorrow. Here's a suggestion when considering a difficult choice: Ask yourself this question: Will the action I take today make a difference in my world in 7 days, 7 months, and 7 years? Give it try!

Allow time to Live while working on those goals

There is value in the doing of a thing beyond that thing getting “done”. Our social structures nowadays have an obsession with so-called “productivity”, and oftentimes for good reason. The end product is where the profit is made, and profit is where money comes from. More productivity means more end product means more money. More money can be useful, most of the time. It is true, however, that sometimes, we fall into this within an unpaid venture. Checking this and this and this off our list means we have more time for this and this and this. What gets lost in all of this is the value of the process. Getting something done as fast as possible, or doing as much as possible, is not the same thing as doing that thing with joy and appreciation. Try it out. Sweep, instead of vacuum. Walk, instead of drive. Make from scratch, instead of store-buy. Believe in the idea that a process can mean something beyond that process being over with. As we move forward in our lives, it is important to introduce and cultivate atelic activities (meaning “activities which do not complete”). Fitness, for example, is often marginalized with goals and a sense of completion: “I want to lose 10 pounds” or “I want to run a marathon”. Great. But when the goal is accomplished, do we let go of all the healthy habits we created, all the skills we cultivated on the way? Appreciation and grace for all of our abilities to change and evolve and recreate ourselves in a never-ending process gets us closer to the truest “purpose” we have in life: To live while we are alive.
