Let's start a cultural shift in the relationship we have with our mortality by modernizing the ethical will for younger generations.

The first step in shifting our culture starts with ourselves. We need to lead our best lives. We need to document and share who we are and what we value…essentially what we want our legacy to be…so that we can lead that best life, knowing we are mortal and could say goodbye at any time. This episode introduces the concept of an Ethical Will, where it came from an how we should modernize it for everyone to use (without the pretense of religion). Gretchen Ocasio is an ex-software executive who spent decades in the tech space always searching for more meaning.

In Her Words:
"The software side had always taken me away from human connection and into science and business and process to make a living. Periodically, I was jolted back to the human connection part of life by death.

Those interruptions seemed to have been a recurring lesson ... the connection to death is what was providing greater human connection in my life.

I've seen our response to a loved one's death create a crisis every time. A crisis that was destroying a part of us in some way. And I couldn't help but wonder if there was a better way for us to approach this. Did we always need to be so surprised and devastated when that happened? Could we be more planful to ease the devastation? Could we understand the process better so that the fear and pain would not be so severe? Could we know our loved ones and ourselves better so that we know how to honor each in the best way and facilitate our own healthy grieving process?

If our mortality and death is something that we have in the forefront of our minds and acceptable conversation to have in our culture, our pain can be eased through this process. We can be better prepared to celebrate and have healthy grief instead of being so devastated for years. It is for everyone around me I love that I am taking this journey ... a journey to make a shift in our culture. To educate, to discuss, and to bring light to our mortality. We can do this in a better way."
