May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month! 🗣️🦻🏼👄

It is important to remember that not everyone is able to communicate verbally - there are many other forms of communication, including the use of an AAC device (augmentative and alternative communication).

You may not know that April is Parkinson's Awareness month 🤔 You also may not know that nearly 90,000 people are diagnosed with Parkinson's each year in the U.S alone.

In our community, our primary caseload is individuals with PD. As speech-language pathologists, we help individuals who experience changes with their voice, cognition, communication, and swallowing.

We are so grateful to continue to provide individualized-approaches to therapy to maximize each client's quality of life and independence.

Have you ever heard of an Expiratory Muscle Strength Trainer? 🤔💭

In our field, we often utilize the EMST with our clients who have Parkinson's disease. Most often, we hear that our clients have difficulty projecting their voice, difficulty coordinating their breath support when speaking, and a change in vocal quality.

The EMST is an effective tool to utilize in therapy and to teach our clients the importance of daily practice (aka consistency 😉) to maximize their expiratory muscles - ultimately leading to a stronger voice.

Penetrating TBI occurs when an object pierces through the skull and enters the brain tissue. This type of injury often results from gunshot wounds, stabbings, or other sharp objects penetrating the skull.

Non-penetrating TBI, also known as "closed head injury," occurs when the brain experiences trauma without any pe*******on of the skull. This type of injury can result from various causes such as falls, motor vehicle accidents, sports-related injuries, or assaults. The force of impact causes the brain to collide with the inside of the skull, leading to bruising, tearing of nerve fibers, and other types of damage.
