I try to post things people will find informative or interesting, but this one is for me….

It’s remarkable, and incredibly fortunate, that I’ve made it to 54 without experiencing profound loss.

I’ve experienced grief - people who meant a lot to me have died, relationships have ended, pregnancies were lost, pets never live as long as we want them to…. All of these have left a permanent impression on my soul, yet none of them prepared me for the death of a person who had a profound effect on my life and altered my perception of myself as a person.

Nothing could have prepared me for this. Like a tree that falls that no one hears, there’s a part of me that no living being has seen, and feels like it never existed. I wonder if this is what people who lose a long-time partner, a parent, or a child feel like? I wonder if other people experience this loss of self and just don’t talk about it?

I thought I understood grief. I thought that I was able to fully empathize with my clients, to be able to truly feel their pain with them. I had no idea.

I know in time my grief ball will shrink. I know this incredible pain will make me a better therapist. And….I know there will come a time (hopefully MANY years from now) when I’ll experience this again.

In the meantime, life goes on. I’ll be more intentional in finding joy and comfort with my loved ones, giving my pets some extra love, enjoying the satisfaction I get from work, and taking time to rest.

I completed my Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy through Journey Clinical (www.journeyclinical.com) earlier this year. I wanted to try KAP myself before doing it with clients.

Yesterday, my employers at Sustainable Wellness provided the opportunity via a 1-day retreat complete with yoga, meditation, ketamine dosing, and a sound bath. What a fantastic experience!

I look forward to offering KAP to my clients so they can experience it as well.

I follow the Gottman Method (and am trained through Level 2) with the couples I work with. Couples learn to create understanding from conflict, build positive regard, cultivate shared meaning in their lives together, and to turn towards each on a daily basis.
