One thing about presenting at the Apraxia Kids Conference is that you get feedback. I’m beyond thrilled with the feedback! Attendees shared how much they enjoyed the session and expressed a desire to dive even deeper into the topics I covered. It’s so rewarding to hear that people want more, and I’m already thinking about how I can expand and make the next one even better.

I’m especially excited to present this school year to a variety of schools nationwide, specifically on CAS, AAC/AT, and Literacy in the schools! Here’s to making a difference for ALL students!

I am thrilled to share one of the research articles that emerged from the 2022 Apraxia Kids Research Symposium. As both a clinician and the mother of a child with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), I understand the critical importance of discussing the future directions of research in this field. The prospect of where this research may lead is incredibly exciting. It’s open access for anyone who would like to read it!

The last two weeks have been crazy, but such an amazing experience. I presented my solo presentation regarding CAS in older kids to a packed room, and presented with an amazing set of SLPs regarding preparing little kids with CAS to be ready for DTTC. I also completed 19 hours of continuing education at the conference on a variety of therapy techniques, as well as being a part of the speaker luncheon and meeting with families in the “SLP-Is-In” booth. I talked a LOT with parent and professionals about how best to support kids with CAS in the school setting. It was my 7th conference and my 6th time presenting.
This year, my business is growing into the consultation/professional development space in Western NY. I’ve had some great conversations with assistant superintendents from various districts about how I can help suppport their staff. If anyone would like to send a flyer to your district administrators, let me know and I’ll send it over to you! I consult and provide professional development nationwide.

As an SLP, I do a LOT of teletherapy between clients/students in NY, NH, and Maine along with consultations across the country. There is often a concern that teletherapy isn’t as effective as in-person. When we decided to get my son tutoring this summer for spelling/writing, I reached out to the place I trusted the most. It just happens to be in Vermont, so this summer he is getting tutored by a teacher in Vermont over Zoom. When I say I believe in this as an SLP, I believe in it for my own child as well.

As an SLP that specializes in CAS and a mom of a 12-year-old with CAS, I know how much this research is needed. Please consider filling out the survey so it can help guide the future of CAS evaluation and treatment. Thanks!

Becoming a neurodiversity-affirming speech-language pathologist means embracing and celebrating the unique ways in which each client communicates and learns. By recognizing that differences in communication and behavior are natural variations rather than deficits, I can provide more personalized support. This approach ensures that therapy is not only effective but also empowering, helping clients to build confidence, develop their strengths, and thrive in their daily lives. It reflects a commitment to understanding and valuing each individual's perspective, fostering an inclusive environment where every client feels understood and supported.

Thank you to the family advocate that took the time to recognize that in my evaluation!

After my recent talk for the Student Success Project, parents asked, "What exactly is an Independent Educational Evaluation?"

The majority of IEEs that I complete are due to parent requests. I’ve included some of those reasons.

I’ve also had school districts request an IEE when they lack a provider with my qualifications. It’s rare to find an SLP with advanced training in AAC, Childhood Apraxia of Speech, and Literacy. My years of experience as a school-based provider allows me to approach each IEE with a specialized perspective.

Interesting fact—I didn't know what an Independent Educational Evaluation was until I requested one for my own child. Now, I truly believe that an IEE is one of the most important rights a parent has!
