Nightlase of Rochester: “Goodbye to Snoring.”

Have you ever gone to sleep and dreamed that you were running from a loud, old-time freight train..., only to wake up and find that your sleep partner is just snoring? Snoring is not just a nuisance for one’s sleep partner, but the vibrations can irritate the inside lining of the carotid arteries, causing inflammation and textured irregularities (see Medical News Today https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/255459.php), thus making it easier for atherosclerotic plaques to collect. This condition can result in chronic oxygen depletion in the brain and can lead to ED, weight gain, chronic fatigue and even a stroke.

Then, there can be times when the airway is so obstructed by soft tissues in the back of the mouth that the person actually stops breathing for periods of time- sleep apnea.

Classically, these situations have been dealt with painful surgical approaches (cutting away portions of the soft palate), the CPAP machine- a machine that forces air into the mouth or nostrils to keep the airway patent. For moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, this contraption is very effective, but it can be a bit noisy, cumbersome with the attached hose, and is definitely not sexy.

Another modality is the M.A.D. appliance (mandibular advancement device), which is purported to open the airway by keeping the lower jutted out forwardly throughout the night. For some reason, I don’t want my jaw looking like Sammy Davis’ for 6 to 8 hours during the night.
