I’m excited to facilitate .ny’s DBT Skills Group starting Thursday 9/19/24! I previously taught these skills groups for about 4 years, and am looking forward to getting back into this work.

This is virtual group that runs like a class. The upcoming module focuses on teaching Distress Tolerance skills. The group repeatedly cycles through three 8-week modules, each designed to build mastery to a specific skillset. Participants are required to complete homework assignments where they practice the skills taught during each weekly lesson.

• Thursdays from 5:15pm - 6:30pm
• 8 weeks
• Ages 18+
• $45/session

Yes yes yes! Toymaker honors social work pioneer, journalist and activist Ida B. Wells with her own Barbie Doll. We know children learn through play. These are the historical icons children need to learn about.

Ida B. Wells was an integral part of the progressive movement, using her passion for social justice and skills as a journalist to fight for racial and gender equality. She was the first person to document the lynching of African Americans and led many anti-lynching campaigns.

Born a slave in July 1862 to parents who were also political activists, Wells worked alongside Frederick Douglass, Mary Church Terrell, and W.E.B. DuBois.

She was instrumental in founding the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), The Negro Fellowship League, and other groups that advocated for equal rights for all Americans.

The doll will be available beginning Jan. 17th, which is also Day.

The work we put into avoiding uncomfortable situations can be almost as uncomfortable as the situation itself. Avoidance helps us tolerate pain and discomfort. It works...but only temporarily. To start building a tolerance to discomfort, follow these three steps:

1. Be open to what hurts.
2. Be aware of how it affects you.
3. Be engaged in choosing how to respond.

Love this. Adele does inner child work and caters her new album toward those her age doing the same.

“In addition to creating music for people who are undergoing therapy, Adele is equally committed to her own pursuit of better mental health. Her therapist advised her to "sit with my little 7-year-old self. Because she was left on her own. And I needed to go sit with her and really address how I felt when I was growing up," she told Vogue last month.”

I’ve been coming across the “mindset is everything” messaging a lot lately. It’s become a popular statement among coaches and influencers, and even a motivational default to kick ourselves into gear at times.

Mindset is hugely important, yes. But, it isn’t everything. And, putting responsibility on the individual to have a particular mindset in order to thrive dismisses other factors that also significantly impact on our lives.

These factors may include (but aren’t limited to): chronic illnesses, physical and mental disabilities, neurodivergence (which changes how someone perceives and operates in the world), poverty, being a minority, systemic racism, PTSD/trauma.

Trauma in and of itself leaves a physical imprint on the body, altering the nervous system, the way we store memories, and our ability to access the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for planning, decision making, personality expression, moderating social behaviors and controlling certain aspects of speech and language.

We can tell ourselves to have a good attitude. But, that’s hardly an assurance that our problems will go away and we’ll feel better. Yes, mindset is important…hugely important. But it isn’t everything.
