When Matthew Jean, our director of the neurosurgical ICU and acute stroke neurosurgical stepdown unit at Henry Ford Hospital, saw a critical equipment issue impacting care for patients with hydrocephalus or brain bleeds, he worked to find a solution.

Inspired by how Lego blocks snap together, he came up with an idea to better secure the connection between the external ventricular drain (or EVD, which is used to monitor pressure in the brain) and the transducer. Previously, this connection could sometimes loosen, increasing the risk of infection.

In collaboration with Henry Ford Innovations, that Lego-inspired idea was transformed into a 3D-printed clip that helps prevent infections, avoids unnecessary procedures and reduces the need to replace costly specialized equipment.

Michelle Mann used to experience 15 to 20 debilitating migraine headaches each month – missing days of her life to sit quietly in the dark in hopes they would pass.

She suffered through ineffective treatments for years until finding relief with our neurologist Dr. Ashhar Ali. He created a treatment plan for her that included a combination of medications, Botox injections and occipital nerve blocks – a procedure that injects medication into the back of the head to target inflamed or injured nerves that can be a source of chronic headaches.

“For 3 months, I didn’t have a single headache,” Michelle says. “I thought, ‘Could I really be cured?’”

Her headaches eventually returned but decreased to just 3 to 4 per month – which has dramatically increased her quality of life. “I can now spend time outdoors with my family, fully participate in my kids’ activities and work without needing excessive time off,” she says.

Combination treatments play a crucial role in managing chronic migraine, where often a single treatment is not sufficient, says Dr. Ali. “It allows us to address the condition from multiple angles,” he explains. “Our holistic approach means we can offer prompt, effective treatment tailored to each patient’s unique needs.”
