Not sure what’s going on, but we’re seeing more and more candidates lie about having degrees on their resumes even when the job doesn’t require one. Why is that?

It has put us in the difficult position of having to pull job offers after background checks revealed the truth. Interviewing under false pretenses damages trust and can cost you the opportunity.

Here’s the reality. Some jobs require a degree, and in those cases, employers often verify education directly with the college or university. Others accept a combination of education and experience, and that’s completely acceptable as long as you’re honest and accurate on your resume or profile.

If you didn’t finish your degree, you can still share your educational background in a clear and truthful way. Here are some professional options:

• List the college or university as “attended” with relevant coursework
• Include the dates attended, such as “2021 to Present” if you’re still enrolled
• Use “anticipated graduation” if you have a projected date
• If no college, simply list your high school diploma

I’ve been there myself. I started college and didn’t finish the first time. It wasn’t the right path at the time. I found a career that didn’t require a degree. Years later, I saw the value of having one and worked hard to earn it. I never once claimed to have one when I didn't.

If you’ve earned a degree, be sure you can verify it. If you haven’t, be honest about your experience. Integrity matters. Always.
