They discussed an array of solutions that Jewish Home is providing for older adults, including expanding on its 75-acre campus and into the community. These include 160 new independent living apartments on the horizon — with Lilac Grove, middle-income apartments opening this May — plus several new home and community-based programs. We thank L3Harris Technologies for spreading cheer during this season of giving by choosing Jewish Home as a recipient of a LIFT Grant. The L3Harris team assembled and distributed holiday gift bags to all Jewish Home skilled nursing residents. We are fortunate to have wonderful community partners!

The winter solstice will be upon us this Sunday, and on this “Longest Night” of the year, Jewish Home, along with the Alzheimer’s Association, will shine a light on Alzheimer’s and dementia awareness. Longer nights can worsen evening agitation and confusion for those living with dementia, a symptom known as “sundowning.” Decreased sunlight and colder temperatures can result in disruptions to routine, hormonal shifts, and increased restlessness.

Some tips that may minimize these disturbances: Maximize light, either natural or use of a light box; create a calming evening routine; avoid caffeine in the evening; and find ways to add gentle movement into the day.

On this first night of Hanukkah, we light the candles with heavy hearts as we hold the victims of the tragedy in Sydney, and their families and loved ones, in our thoughts. Jewish Home recently launched The Clare & Jerry Rotenberg Center for Excellence in Dementia Care at an event featuring a panel discussion with memory care experts and a keynote by actress, director and Alzheimer’s advocate Ashley Williams — who shared her journey with Alzheimer’s in her family.

The Dementia Center will improve quality of life for those living with dementia and memory loss and empower and support their families and caregivers through innovative programs, education and training, and resource navigation. Community partners, such as Alzheimer's Association and Lifespan, participated in a resource fair during the event. The Summit Knitters are once again warming more than just hearts this season. A group of Summit residents volunteered their time and talents to handcraft 230 hats and scarves for local children in need. The busy friends made many donations this year — to Baden Street Settlement, Bethany House and Jewish Family Services.
