Infrared video goggles is a common tool used by vestibular therapists, including bloom physical therapy.

We use infrared video goggles as a window into your vestibular and neurological systems. The goggles block out light, which can help to tease out small eye movements called nystagmus, and provide us with important information about your vestibular function. There are infrared cameras in the goggles, which allow us to view your eyes on screen.

What is the dizzy anxious dizzy loop?

A dizziness event can very understandably be scary and anxiety provoking. Your autonomic nervous system may perceive this as an internal threat to your safety, and shift into a “fight or flight mode” in order to keep you safe. (You can find more about the autonomic nervous system in previous posts).

Over time, your nervous system may learn to associate or group these things together, so that when dizziness occurs, your autonomic nervous system will react and vice versa. Your body may then start to pay extra attention to any and all movements, positions, or situations that have the potential to cause dizziness, and will trigger the fight or flight response to protect you. This can lead to increased sensitivity to triggers, more dizziness, and more anxiety.

Can it be changed? YES! You have the ability to change your nervous and vestibular systems in a positive way!
Through learning to identify when this is happening, working on your mindset and the words that you tell yourself, using nervous system regulation exercises, and working on the underlying cause of your dizziness - you can break the dizzy anxious dizzy cycle.

Aging is associated with degradation of the vestibular system, which leads to reduced sensory feedback to your brain. The incidence of BPPV also increases with age. (BPPV is a common cause of vertigo, scroll previous posts to learn more!)
Because of this, older adults may not experience the the room spinning vertigo that’s typical of BPPV.
Instead, you may feel a sense of vague imbalance or dizziness, a veering sensation when walking, or generalized fatigue.
This is SO important because BPPV is a risk factor for falls. If you’re an older adult experiencing trouble with balance or similar symptoms, you should be screened for BPPV.

Definitely challenges the patient but also checks in to make sure you’re good! Would absolutely recommended her!!” (Google review)

FND stands for Functional Neurological Disorder. FND is a problem with the functioning of the nervous system and how the brain and body send and receive signals.

FND is a common neurological disorder. You may see me post a lot about PPPD on this page (which is one cause of chronic dizziness)- did you know that PPPD is a type of functional neurological disorder?
Symptoms are variable and also vary from person to person. Some other symptoms you might see are weakness, tremor, dystonia, non-epileptic seizure, sensory loss or changes, vision changes, paralysis, changes in gait, trouble with walking and balance, brain fog, cognitive changes, and others..

There are treatment options available for FND, such as physical, occupational, speech therapy, and psychology. It’s possible for symptoms to improve with treatment. Here’s a few broad examples of areas Therapy might address: the autonomic nervous system, sensory training, motor control/ movement training, treating related physical impairments or injuries, and addressing psychosocial or lifestyle needs if present. It looks different for everyone!

Neuroplasticity and Dizziness:

Neuroplasticity is your brain’s ability to create new connections, grow, and reorganize in response to stimuli.

Neuroplasticity can help to explain one way that chronic dizziness (like PPPD) develops and how it’s possible to heal.
