Our RGH stroke team = superheroes.💙

🌟 BRIGHT SPOT: Local Mom Makes Incredible Recovery After Stroke 🌟

At just 37 years old, the last thing Lindsey Seiler expected to happen to her was a stroke.

While at home one day in January 2023, Lindsey sat down on her couch and discovered she could no longer lift her legs. Her condition quickly worsened, as she fell to the ground and was unable to speak.

Fortunately, Lindsey's family was home and called 911. She was taken by ambulance to Rochester General Hospital, where she received an emergency mechanical thrombectomy by Dr. Takamasa Higashimori and his team, which effectively saved Lindsey's life.

After just three days, Lindsey was able to return home to her family and continued to make great progress. Now, Lindsey says she is "doing amazing" and feels much better all around. She has a new outlook on life and has made significant changes to her own routine to help decrease the risk of another stroke.

🥰 And now, a year and a half later, Lindsey will be joining us at our Stroke Awareness Day with the Rochester Red Wings this Sunday, May 19 to throw out the first pitch! ⚾️

Congratulations to Lindsey on her recovery - we can't wait to celebrate with you on Sunday!! 💙

As a kick off to Nurses' Week, we were thrilled to unveil our new Daisy Award winner plaques and the beautiful "Healer's Touch" sculpture in the lobby of our hospital, honoring all the nurses who have made a difference in our patients' lives.

Thanks to $1M in funding secured this week by Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Rochester Regional Health will be able to enhance our virtual care delivery technology for patients at RGH & Unity Hospital! 💻 🏥

This tech will not only provide better real-time patient monitoring, but will also allow health care workers the ability to provide patients with a number of virtual specialty care services including social work, care management, clinical support, dietary management, pharmacist access and more.

🕊️ Honoring a Rochester Regional Health Icon, Sylvia James 🕊️

Yesterday, coworkers, friends, and family of Sylvia James gathered to formally dedicate the Equipment Room in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at RGH to her memory.

Sylvia began her 22 year career at RGH as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) in April 2001. For 17 years, she brought her compassion and expertise to the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) before transitioning to the SICU, where she continued to serve for more than five years. Most recently, Sylvia took on the role of Materials Coordinator for Sands 5 and Sands 8, demonstrating her versatility and dedication to our hospital’s mission.

Although Sylvia only worked in a few units during her tenure, her presence was felt throughout the whole hospital. She had the uncanny ability to connect with everyone she encountered, making every interaction feel special. Coworkers said that “walking down the hall with Sylvia was like walking next to a celebrity,” with all the people who would come up and excitedly say hello to her – no matter what area of the hospital they were in. 🥰 ✨

In addition to all the lives she touched with her warmth and kindness, Sylvia made exceptional professional contributions during her time at RGH. Sylvia’s organizations skills were unparalleled, and her knowledge of the equipment room was unmatched. As her coworker, Megan Malloy summed up during the dedication, “Sylvia was the only person who always knew where everything was.”

Of course, Sylvia’s legacy extends far beyond her professional accomplishments. She was an exceptionally nurturing soul, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer words of wisdom to her colleagues. Her impact on the RGH community cannot be overstated and her memory will forever live on in our hearts. 💙

As we continue to see an increase in seasonal illnesses across the region, we may have to implement certain visitor restrictions, such as masking, as a strategy to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, RSV and the flu virus for limited portions of time within our facilities. NOTICE: Planned Community Decontamination Exercise on Saturday, October 7th

⚠️ Rochester General Hospital will be conducting a community decontamination drill on Saturday, 10/7, from 7am - 1pm, in partnership with the Rochester Fire Department and American Medical Response (AMR).

🏥 All facilities, including the Emergency Department and the Wilson Health Center / Urgent Care will remain OPEN and fully operational during the drill. Scheduled procedures and appointments will not be affected.

🅿️ Please note the South Entrance of the Wilson parking area will be closed during the drill - all other lots will remain open.

Thank you for your understanding as we work with our team and community partners to ensure our hospital's readiness for all emergency situations.

Today, we honor Rosa Wims, LPN, who passed away at the age of 100 on September 23, 2023. 🕊️

Though we are saddened by her passing, we will be forever grateful for the legacy she has left behind.

Ms. Wims was a trailblazer in the medical community, becoming one of the first black nurses at Rochester General Hospital. She worked quietly behind the scenes to advocate for and ensure the health and wellness of thousands of people in underserved communities. She never asked for praise or recognition - she did what she did because she knew it would make a difference and save countless lives.

After 30 years of service, Ms. Wims retired from RGH in 1984. And in honor of her 100th birthday (December 23, 2022), the Rosa W. Wims LPN Scholarship Fund was established to help support the education, training, and certification of a diverse and inclusive workforce throughout RRH.

Together with all those whose lives she has touched, we celebrate Ms. Wims' life, we thank her for all she has done, and we reflect on how we can all be more like Rosa. 💙
