With the change in season comes some changes in our schedule! We're adding a community class every other Wednesday in partnership with EVEN Hotel Rochester - Mayo Clinic Area, a completely donation-based class that anyone is welcome to join. As a bonus, it'll be outside!

Our Thursday class is moving from 12:15 to 7am, and is moving locations as well! You'll find us at Mezza9 Cafe & Dessert, so you can grab a cup of coffee after class to really start your day well.

We'll be downtown on Saturday mornings for FREE Family Yoga on the Peace Plaza, starting this weekend.

And as always, we have lots of special events planned with Rick and a special celebration on International Day of Yoga to celebrate the summer solstice.

Which change are you most looking forward to?

We're still busy exploring our theme of earth this month. We use the earth to stabilize and ground so we can continue to reach up, to grow, and to expand. What poses help you feel most connected to the earth?

And they say there are no silly questions 😅

Self care is such a buzzword these days, but it really is important to make sure you're filling your cup so you can show up as your best self. Here are some of our favorite ways to hit the reset button; what would you add?

Meet Allison! Allison is the founder of Unity Yoga and is incredibly passionate about this project. Here's a bit more about her:

I approach every class with curiosity and playfulness and offer many options for exploring familiar poses in new ways. I love how freeing it can be to move on your mat using breath as a guide toward deeper understanding.

Different poses feel different in each individual body, and I honor that individuality in my classes. As a 500-hour trained teacher and passionate movement guide, I believe that poses are just a tool to learn about yourself and your unique physical body. Through this tool, you can move deeper into your true Self and tap into the magic of every moment and every breath. All while being playful and often laughing.

When not teaching yoga, you can find Allison drinking coffee, digging in the dirt with her houseplants, reading any and all books, or hanging out at our local breweries or restaurants!

Square breathing, also called box breathing, is one of our favorite breath practices to explore. Here's a quick tutorial:

Begin by inhaling for four seconds (or three or six, you choose), hold your breath for the same amount of time (we'll stick with four second), exhale out for four seconds, hold after the exhale for four seconds. Repeat as many times as needed to allow your nervous system to settle and calm.

If you need some extra grounding (monthly theme, anyone?) use your finger to trace a square while you breathe.

Our theme this month is Earth. Practice grounding into the earth with a "simple" balance practice. Root one foot into the ground, whether standing or seated. Then lift your other foot off the floor, starting with one inch and lifting up as high as feels comfortable or safe. Feel the weight shifting in your supporting foot as you wobble and adjust. Take 3-5 breaths, then try on your second side.

Explore this practice at different times of the day to see when you feel most grounded and stable, and when you're needing some extra support!

It’s world book day, and we LOVE books! While there are so many books that relate to yoga and practice and meditation, here are a few that we turn to again and again.

The Eight Limbs of Yoga. It’s a classic that breaks down the practice of yoga into the eight main guideposts of what the practice truly is. Spoiler alert: it’s more than just asana, or poses!

Breath by Breath. This book dives deep into meditation and what insight meditation is. It’s a tangible way to start thinking about meditation if you’re intimidated.

Om Chanting and Meditation. If you’ve ever wondered about the meaning of Om and why it’s often used in yoga, this book shares what this essential sound is all about. It includes some really wonderful meditation practices to get you familiar with the idea and sounds of this universal vibration.

Your Body Your Yoga. Our bodies are all shaped differently, but we often expect our physical practice to look the same as “everyone else’s” and this book breaks down why that’s just not the reality from an anatomical standpoint. For instance, the length of your shins and arms will often determine whether or not you can step your foot through from downward dog into a low lunge, not your physical capability.

How to be an Antiracist by . Yoga is a living practice, and though this book probably isn’t on many yoga TBR lists, we think it’s critical for not just “love and light”-ing your way through the world, but really changing from within to change the world around you.

The Teacher’s Guide to Accessible Yoga by . The newest must read on our list for sure! There are so many dog eared pages in this book, so many notes and questions and thoughts. There are many wonderful things about this book, including thoughts from many seasoned yoga teachers as well as reflection questions throughout each chapter. It is a founding work of our mission here at Unity Yoga, so we obviously had to include it!

What are some of your favorite books, yoga or not?
