It's been a busy, exciting week as RAA's staff have participated in the World Canals Conference in Buffalo, with a hosted field trip in Fairport! We will be sharing some highlights from the week, like this one from our friends at Hudson Crossing Park, Schuylerville, NY - one of the Accessibility Education Program's first cohort members.
Our Executive Director, Kate Morse, and everyone’s favorite travel buddy, Henry, joined the Erie Canal Boat Company at the World Canals Conference in Buffalo for an incredible demonstration with Rochester Accessible Adventures (RAA). Adaptive launches, kayaks, and bikes were showcased, showing how waterways and trails can be opened to paddlers and riders of all abilities.
We’re proud to be part of this global conversation on inclusion, accessibility, and the future of canals.

There is nothing like the JOY we see on people's faces when they learn that there ARE businesses that expect them to be participating in adventures like kayaking, cycling, fishing, birding, fencing, nature exploration, visiting a library, enrolling in a class at a local community center, or a boat ride on the Erie Canal!
HUGE thanks to our Connection Champion Sponsor, Mida Heating and Air Conditioning, for our 10 Year Anniversary Celebration on October 3rd! YOU are making happen and directly connecting people living with disabilities and medical conditions to a LIFETIME of accessible, inclusive recreation!
Glowing string lights over a thank you message recognizing a Connection Champion Sponsor, MIDA Heating & Air Conditioning, celebrating 50 years.

Birding is so beneficial! Check out this article about its beenfits, and if you haven't tried it, or if you are looking for a social birding community, check out our partners, Genesee Valley Audubon Society and Montezuma Audubon Center, as they create greater access for more people!
After Lyme disease forced him into retirement, geologist Bob Bell found healing in birding, improving wellness, sharing knowledge, and inspiring people to connect with birds. This article originally appeared in the Sept. 2025 issue of Birding. The ABA recognizes the immense importance of birding to wellness and healthy living, and is pleased to offer this article online as a free service to the entire birding community.

Our Community Health Inclusion (CHI) initiatives spread the power and joy of inclusive recreation throughout communities. RAA uses a three-pronged approach to training recreation businesses to operate inclusively whenever their doors are open!! With this new model of true inclusion, it means families and friends can jump in and participate in REAL TIME -- that is, when they want to, with people they want to participate with, and doing things they want to be doing -- ALL WHILE KNOWING their needs will be met!
Our CHI partners include:
Erie Canal Boat Company in Fairport NY and Lockport, NY-- kayak and cycle rentals
Pickled Power -- Rochester NY -- pickleball instruction by Bob Stokes
Victor Parks and Recreation -- Victor NY -- a dynamic community recreation department
Healthy Highway -- a whole-life approach to sustainable wellness by Wendy Cooper
Genesee Valley Park Sports Complex -- training staff to provide inclusive programming
School 29 - Creating an Inclusion Team to address social inclusion throughout the school
Irondequoit Recreation -- starting the process of Inclusion throughout their department
More CHI partners are coming each year! Stay tuned as all of these wonderful entities begin thinking AND OPERATING inclusively so that all members of our community can participate!
