As medical students, OUWB alumni Caroline Roberts, M.D., and Madison Romanski, M.D., noticed that people experiencing homelessness lacked access to basic skincare, leading to painful sunburns and long-term health risks.
They turned their observation into action by securing grants to create free skincare kits based on direct feedback from the community.
Their project was so impactful that it will continue. It's a powerful reminder that health care is about caring for the whole person—including the small, everyday needs.

This summer, OUWB students traded the classroom for a life-changing experience in Ghana! 🌍
From shadowing doctors at a local hospital to visiting community clinics, OUWB medical students Nedi Affas and Mackenzie Farrow witnessed incredible resilience and learned how culture and resourcefulness shape patient care.
The journey wasn't just clinical—it was also a powerful lesson in history and humanity at sites like Cape Coast Castle.
Dean Christopher Carpenter, M.D., stopped by to spend some time with "Spike Protein" – a group of OUWB medical students who get together most Fridays to decompress and have fun on the volleyball court.
So proud of our students for finding ways to connect, have fun, and support each other!

Talk about full circle! 🔄
The journey of David Tobin, M.D., OUWB '17, to become a pediatrician began when he was a young patient. The compassionate care he and his brother received from Beaumont Health (now Corewell Health) pediatricians during their diabetes diagnoses inspired his entire career.
Now, he's the one providing that same calm, empowering care to his own patients — and he was even recently honored with an Oakland University "10 Within 10" award for his community contributions! 🏆
He says: “We came out of it empowered. We felt like we had somebody who was watching our back and everything was going to be okay.”

Oakland University (Oakland) and Beaumont Health (Beaumont) were founded at approximately the same time, half a century ago, in close proximity to each other and in a region of greater Detroit.
Oakland University and Beaumont Health
Today, Oakland is one of 15 public universities in Michigan. Oakland has an enrollment exceeding 20,000 students and a Carnegie classification of doctoral/research university-intensive.
Beaumont is a not-for-profit organization formed by Beaumont Health System, Botsford Health Care and Oakwood Healthcare to provide high quality, efficient, accessible services in a caring environment for southeastern Michigan residents and beyond.
OUWB medical students train at three of the eight Beaumont Health Hospitals: Beaumont Royal Oak, Beaumont Troy, and Beaumont Grosse Pointe.
The partnership between Oakland University and Beaumont Health
Following exploratory discussions, including discussions with community leaders, Oakland and Beaumont concluded that the combined faculty, staff and infrastructure resources of their institutions would provide a remarkably strong base on which to build a new medical school.
In January 2007, Oakland and Beaumont submitted a letter of intent to the LCME to initiate the formal process of accrediting a new allopathic medical school. The initiative to fund a new medical school was approved by both the Beaumont Hospital Board of Directors and the Oakland University Board of Trustees on July 31, 2008.
