This prestigious national award recognizes medical students who have made outstanding contributions to public health through research, advocacy, and outreach, particularly in service to underserved communities. Recipients are chosen for their leadership, impact, and potential to shape the future of public health.

Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine’s Class of 2029 took center stage at their White Coat Ceremony on Friday.

About 1,000 people watched the rite of passage as the 124 newest members of the OUWB family received their white coats.

“As the years pass, it will become clear that you’re developing into an OUWB-trained physician…one who is culturally aware, competent, and compassionate,” said OUWB Dean Christopher Carpenter, M.D.

“The adventure starts now!”

On just the second day of medical school, OUWB’s Class of 2029 prepared 500 care kits that will be distributed to people in need throughout southeast Michigan.

“We wanted the students to see that at OUWB we’re not just about what we say, but what we do,” said one OUWB official. “We wanted them to have an understanding that we have good partnerships with community organizations that are doing great work, and they rely on a lot of our support.”

Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine officially welcomed its 15th class Monday as a busy week of orientation kicked off for the school’s newest class.

The exciting week culminates on Friday when the new students are set to participate in the 2025 OUWB White Coat Ceremony.

“This is really exciting for us,” said Berkley Browne-Holtz, Ph.D., associate dean, Student Affairs. “We’ve been anticipating these students for months…we’re looking forward to a great week with them.”

For one group of past, present, and future medical students at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, it’s safe to say that OUWB is truly a family affair.

Meet the Thomas cousins:

Jackie, Julianne, and Jacob Thomas are officially starting their medical school journey as members of the Class of 2029 this Monday!

They’ll be joining their cousin Christina Thomas, who begins her second year at OUWB the same day.

And all four are following in the footsteps of their inspiring cousin, Alison Thomas, M.D., OUWB ’20, now a practicing OB-GYN physician!

“Even more impressive is that each of these students gained admission without us knowing of their relationship to one another,” said one OUWB official.

For one group of past, current, and future medical students at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, it’s definitely safe to say that the school is a family affair.

Last week, OUWB hosted CampMed — a two-day event that gives high school students the opportunity to discover more about a career in medicine with the help of OUWB students, faculty, and staff.

“It’s important to get these experiences early on and just see where it takes you,” said one student volunteer. “That's how you end up having unique experiences and finding your path in medicine.”

As the school year begins, the OUWB Medical Student Government (MSG) executive board already is focused on helping the school maintain its core values while increasing connection among classes and thinking globally.

That’s according to the MSG president for 2025-26, Paige Pistotti.

Pistotti is joined on the board by Vice President Aaryan Patel, Secretary Nandini Koneru, and Treasurer A***n Arora. All four board members are M2s.

OUWB Medical Student Government executive board has big plans for new school year

When medical students at OUWB need a break from their studies, many are turning to art through a school program that recently celebrated its five-year anniversary.

It’s called Art as Therapy — a support group that offers students space to decompress and spend time on something non-medical.

"This experience inspired me to tap back into my creative side and be intentional about making time for art, despite being busy,” said one student.

Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine’s Family Medicine Interest Group has been named one of the top family interest groups in the country.

The American Academy of Family Physicians recognized OUWB’s Family Medicine Interest Group with the AAFP Overall Program of Excellence Award for 2025.

"What sets (the student organization) apart is not just their academic excellence, but their unwavering commitment to the core values of family medicine — continuity of care, advocacy, equity, and holistic patient-centered practice,” said one official.

Social media provides medical students a critical space for connection, learning, and empowerment, according to a recent editorial published by two future physicians from OUWB -- including one who has amassed more than 81,000 followers during her time at the school.

“Social media is reshaping medical education in ways that are only beginning to be understood,” wrote co-authors Sahana Shankar and Forrest Bohler.

A recent graduate from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine recorded what is believed to be among the school’s highest scores on the Step 2 board exam.

Tram Vo, M.D., OUWB ’25, scored a 279 on the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 2 CK (Clinical Knowledge) board exam.

According to an OUWB official, the highest verified score ever recorded anywhere in the country has been 280 (out of 300).
