The OUWB Pediatric Interest Group (PIG) hosted a successful Pie-A-PIG fundraiser Tuesday!

Thanks to an incredible turnout, $400 was raised—double the original goal. All proceeds from this and all PIG Roast-related events go directly to CARE House Oakland County.

Twenty-five people threw pies, many of them multiple times. Seventeen brave volunteers got pied, including 12 students and five faculty members: Drs. Baxa, Taylor, Newman, Karamyan, and Brummett.

Olivia McNelly, M2 and PIG Roast Coordinator, said the event went very well and that it was rewarding to double their goal.

"Something like Pie-a-PIG helps create a fun, silly way for everyone to connect and have a good time. And, everyone knows it's for a great cause!!" she said.

Thirteen OUWB medical students have been awarded scholarships for the 2025-26 academic year, made possible entirely by generous donor support.

These scholarships recognize excellence, service, and a deep commitment to OUWB’s mission. For the recipients, it’s more than financial aid—it’s a powerful vote of confidence in their journeys and future careers.

M4 Amy Lin shared, “This recognition reassures me that the challenges and sacrifices along the way have been worthwhile.” M4 Christian Santiago added that receiving his scholarship felt like “a personal vote of confidence in my decision to pursue neurology.”

From reducing student debt to empowering advocacy and clinical focus, these scholarships shape the kind of compassionate, community-minded physicians our future needs.

A heartfelt thank you to every donor investing in our students—you’re not just giving funds, you’re building the healers of tomorrow. ❤️

Huge congratulations to OUWB M4 Vincent Le, who just received the life-changing news that he has matched into an ophthalmology residency!

Vincent will be heading to his top choice: California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. He says an away elective there "felt like home," making this match even more special.

Reflecting on the achievement, Vincent shared:
“The first thing I thought about is how grateful I am to be in this spot. Whatever success I have achieved is largely the result of the support I’ve received from my mentors, peers, family, and loved ones.”

Please join us in congratulating Vincent! The future of ophthalmology is bright! ✨

OUWB medical students, faculty, and staff honored Martin Luther King, Jr. by volunteering across southeast Michigan last Saturday and Monday.

They served meals in Pontiac and Detroit, assembled warming kits and blankets for local shelters, and sorted donations at Zaman International—living out our mission to build compassionate, community-minded physicians.

As one student shared: “It’s important to give back to the community… It just feels good to make a difference however you can.”

What’s even more exciting? Of those applicants, about 6,300 submitted secondary applications — another record — showing deep interest and commitment to joining the OUWB community.

At OUWB, medical education is more than a curriculum.

It’s where five cousins find a common calling, where students are challenged by the ethical weight of history during the Holocaust, and where humanism is formally honored at signature events.

This ethos carries from the White Coat Ceremony through Match Day, and as one class’s commencement paves the way for another’s beginning, all supported by a community investing in the next generation of compassionate physicians.

These topics and more comprise the list of OUWB’s top stories from 2025.

It’s where five cousins find a common calling, where students are challenged by the ethical weight of history during the Holocaust, and where humanism is formally honored at signature events.

OUWB Students Dive Into Hands-On Learning 🩺

This fall, our M1s and M2s received invaluable hands-on experiences at Corewell Health hospitals through student-led clinical skills nights.

These events bridge the gap between textbook learning and real clinical practice in a low-pressure, supportive environment. Students learned essential procedures, connected with residents and physicians, and received a motivating preview of their future careers.

Highlights included:
▶️ Pediatrics: Intubation, suturing, & IO line placement in a simulation lab.
▶️ Dermatology/Family Medicine: Practicing biopsies and cryotherapy on oranges.
▶️ OB-GYN: C-section suturing, ultrasound, contraception education, and more.

“It rejuvenated me and reminded me why I'm working so hard,” shared Andrew Vaniddekinge, M2.

Throughout the fall semester, many students from OUWB gained hands-on medical skills for the first time at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital (WBUH) in Royal Oak and Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital.

The future of orthopaedics is bright! Last week, over 100 medical students from across Michigan gathered at the 5th Annual OSSM Research Symposium hosted by an OUWB student organization.

Students connected with surgeons, heard honest advice on landing a highly competitive residency, and presented their own research. The event highlighted the growing community and collaboration among Michigan's next generation of orthopaedic leaders.

A unique chance to learn, network, and get real about the journey into this exciting field. 💡

OUWB's DocApella & Spinal Chords recently delivered holiday music to patients at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak! 🎄🎶

The student group performed classics like "Silent Night" and "Jingle Bell Rock" in the PM&R unit, continuing an annual tradition of spreading cheer through song.

“It brings me so much joy to see a smile on the patients we perform for,” said Krithika Sathiya, M2.

Patients sang along, made requests, and shared how much the visit meant to them. For these future physicians, it’s a special way to connect with the community they’ll one day serve.

A recent OUWB signature event lecture by national expert Thaddeus Pope, J.D., Ph.D., explored VSED — voluntarily stopping eating and drinking.

As patients become more aware, this legal option is sought by some to avoid living with conditions like late-stage dementia. Pope explained that VSED is clinically supported and protected by law, but also presents ethical and logistical challenges for health care providers.

The timely discussion engaged over 100 attendees, highlighting the need for preparedness and compassion in end-of-life care.

A top U.S. health law scholar recently spoke at an OUWB event to demystify an end-of-life option gaining a higher profile and being used by an increasing number of patients.
