This post is more about how and why tummy time is so important for helping your baby meet their early milestones! Tummy time should start soon after birth, when much of it will be on a parent's chest. By 3 months, your baby should be on their belly for up to 60 minutes each day (in small increments). By 6 months, they should be on their tummy up to 90 minutes each day. Tummy time is important for strengthening the muscles of the neck, back, hips and shoulders. During tummy time, babies practice lifting their head and chest off of the ground, shifting their weight to reach for toys, and rotating their heads to follow a person or object - these are foundational skills that support later gross motor milestones. Here are some early motor milestones your baby will be working toward in tummy time:
🔹 4 months - rolls stomach to back
🔹 5 months - rolls back to stomach
🔹 6 months - pivots on stomach
🔹 8 months - crawls on stomach
🔹 10 months - creeps on hands and knees

Did you know your baby can learn to drink from a straw as early as 6 months old? It is great for oral development and can typically be mastered by 8-9 months. Here are some tips to help your baby learn this skill:
🔹 Offer small sips of water, breastmilk, or formula in a straw cup that allows you to help express the liquid (we recommend the Rubbermaid Litterless Juice Box for $3.99 found right at Wegmans - see pics in comments)
🔹 Squeeze a small amount of liquid up when your baby closes his/her mouth on the straw
🔹This can also be practiced with thicker liquids such as drinkable yogurt, Kefir, smoothies, or watered down purees
