Ever wondered what happens in the brains of children and adults with Fragile X syndrome?

Fragile X is the most common inherited single-gene cause of autism. More than 40% of boys and 15% of girls with Fragile X syndrome have autism.

💡🔬New describes how the molecules in brain cells act in Fragile X. Imagine a busy intersection full of cars with no brakes; turmoil and damage are inevitable. The same is true in Fragile X—a missing protein creates chaos in the brain and contributes to the cognitive and behavioral symptoms seen in Fragile X: urmc.info/fragilex25

A patient at 11, a physician today!

Bridgette Merriman was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma and treated at Golisano Children’s Hospital at just 11 years old. The compassion and care she received inspired her dream of becoming a pediatric oncologist.

Now cancer-free and freshly graduated from medical school, Bridgette is starting her residency—ready to give her future patients the same hope and healing she once received. ✨

Another step closer to a new Strong Memorial Hospital Emergency Department! 🚧✨

Today, the final steel beam was raised into place during a special “topping-off ceremony” after teams and stakeholders had the chance to sign the beam. The celebration marks a milestone moment in the hospital’s biggest expansion and modernization in 100 years.

We're thrilled to be one step closer to reducing overcrowding, adding more private rooms, and creating a modern ED to ensure our community has the emergency care it needs!

A breakthrough in Hodgkin lymphoma care—led right here at Wilmot Cancer Institute.

A clinical trial testing a treatment that helps the immune system fight cancer achieved a 92% survival rate for patients with advanced Hodgkin lymphoma. Patients like Meghan Lowell trusted Wilmot with their care—and today, she has no evidence of disease. ✨

Her journey is a reminder of the power of clinical research, expert care, and hope.

Two milestones, 375+ second chances ❤️

Congratulations to our Heart Failure and Transplant Team for achieving over 375 heart transplants—a testament to their dedication, expertise, and compassion.

And congrats to Scott Hetsko, who received the gift of life through a heart transplant at Strong 10 years ago! We honor his journey and thank him for his persistent advocacy for organ donation to save others.

Strong Memorial staff left their mark -- literally(!) -- on the future of care in our community. Team members signed the final steel beam for our historic Strong Expansion Project, which will nearly triple the size of the emergency department.

Kathy Parrinello, president and CEO of Strong and Highland Hospitals, also stopped by to sign the beam. “It’s meaningful and special because this is a huge milestone,” Parrinello said. “In less than two years we’ll be moving into the new tower and it is so exciting. Everyone knows how badly we need this for our patients and the community and it is fabulous to be at this point.”

This milestone is a symbol of progress, teamwork, and a celebration of the future of care for Rochester. đź’™
