Dawn "The Juggler" Barr has somehow over the course of the last 18 months avoided any new nicknames - staying just under the nicknaming radar as it were.

She is however tasked with many responsibilities at Rochester West. She has the unenviable job as Nursing Scheduler, the multifaceted job of Health Unit Coordinator, and she also manages appointments and transportation for all our residents. And while everyone at Rochester West has learned to be multi-taskers, Dawn seems to do it with particular ease.

Transitions.

A few months ago, one of our long-time residents was finally able to move back home to Austin.

Michael came to us in 2022 and the road back to Austin was a long one.

Upon arriving, during the tail end of Covid, he was unable to walk, was a full assist with all his activities of daily living, and did not communicate with staff. Over many months he slowly began to regain his physical abilities and along with that his memory and communication skills returned.

Michael eventually returned to full independence, became a resident volunteer - helping to run our resident store - helped residents in many ways on a daily basis.

Since his move, he has been settling into his new assisted living apartment and has been reconnecting with friends and family, has found new friends and is really looking forward to fishing, and the opportunity to return to visit his friends at Rochester West.

The "Love Boat" had Julie McCoy... Rochester West has Julie Clennon .

Julie is the party planner AND the life of the party. She is our high energy diminutive ball of fire. A cook, a baker, a bartender. A card dealer, a nail painter, a dancer. A singer, a jokester, a bus driver.

A touch of home.

For years we have been blessed with quilts made by the 125 LIVE Castle Quilters. Our residents love these handmade quilts and often ask a bit surprised - "This is for me. For me to keep?"

Resident also ask for us to take pictures of them with their quilts with the photos often ending up on the wall of their rooms.

Thank you so much 125 LIVE for warming the hearts (and feet) of our residents over the years.

Kate Postier , our Director of Nursing, made the "mistake" of wearing this sweater to work, and after pontificating about a possible answer to a clinical mystery, she was dubbed "Velma" by our Administrator - who is always looking for opportunities to confer nicknames upon staff.

So, meet Kate "Velma" Postier, our intrepid mystery solver, the brains or our clinical operations, and also the lucky one in the group when it comes to bingo, slot machines and pull tabs.

Last week some resident learned a little bit about Alaska from one of our frequent volunteers - Todd Benson (with props assist from another volunteer Kevin).

Residents learned about dogsledding, the aurora borealis, Alaskan history and geography, the five types of Salmon - King, Sockeye, Coho, Pink and Chum - and much more.

Todd enjoys researching the history, geography, and lifestyles of the people of different states and countries. He and his wife enjoy traveling and experiencing different environments and cultures.

Let us reintroduce you to Sara, our long time Social Worker who is also now our Admissions Coordinator.

From this photo it might not look like it, but she is our very own Tasmanian Devil; sometimes inpatient and impulsive, she is nonetheless a whirlwind of activity and determination. If you want something done at Rochester West, Sara is most often the one to get it done...and she's a pretty good car mechanic too.
