Today, we spotlight Dr. Herman George Canady, whose work revolutionized our understanding of bias in psychological assessments.

Dr. Canady's most influential work explored the significant impact of the examiner's race in intelligence testing. His research provided empirical evidence that Black test-takers often performed differently based on the race of the examiner, highlighting the critical need for cultural sensitivity and awareness in psychological practices. By challenging the status quo and advocating for fair testing, Dr. Canady paved the way for more equitable treatment in the field of psychology.

This Black History Month, let's honor Dr. Herman George Canady, a true pioneer who advanced the field of psychology and also championed the cause of racial equality within it. His work reminds us of the importance of inclusivity and cultural competence in all aspects of mental health.

Today, we honor and celebrate the remarkable Bebe Moore Campbell, a trailblazing advocate and author who dedicated her life to advancing mental health access and equity, particularly within the Black community.

As an acclaimed author, Bebe told stories that shed light on the complexities of mental health, breaking down barriers and challenging stereotypes. Her works, including the critically acclaimed novel "72 Hour Hold," delve into the many challenges faced by individuals and families living with mental health disorders.

Bebe was a fierce advocate for mental health education and support. She co-founded NAMI Inglewood and helped establish National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, observed every July, to bring awareness to the unique mental health challenges that underrepresented groups face in the United States.

Bebe Moore Campbell's voice was a beacon of hope and her actions a blueprint for change. Let's celebrate her today as we continue her legacy: to have conversations, to listen, to understand, and to act.

Today is a special day as we honor Gail Latimer, Assistant Manager of East House's Independent Living Program, for her 35 years of service.

As Gail has said, "For more than 30 years, I have worked in the Independent Living Program at East House, which provides counseling and support for people in recovery who find their own housing in the community. When asked what I do for work, the answer is simpleβ€”I help families grow.”

Gail, thank you for helping families to grow and for making our community a healthier place to live!

Are you feeling the "Winter Blues?" If you experience symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), give these tips a try:

❄️Maximize natural light exposure: Open blinds or curtains and sit by a window during the day. If possible, try taking a short walk during daylight.

❄️Keep consistent sleep and wake times: Maintaining a consistent schedule can help regulate the body’s internal clock and improve overall mood and energy.

❄️Stay socially connected: It can be tempting to isolate during these colder months. Try to stay connected with friends and family, even virtually.

❄️Try light therapy: Sit near a light therapy box for 20-30 minutes in the morning, ideally soon after waking, to boost mood.

Do any other tips work for you? Let us know!
