About Tonya Girard, LMFT:
As a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), I think about systems. I take a person-centered and solution-focused perspective to health care that is concerned with the overall, long-term well-being of individuals and their families/natural support systems. I am an active member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and serve as the tre

asurer of our local MFT chapter. I am a creative individual who implements creative perspectives to problem solving. Increased personal awareness, mindfulness and balance are underlying principles of the work that I do with my clients. I also have a Bachelors in Fine Arts from Alfred University School of Art & Design. While training at Alfred I focused on oil painting, neon/lighting design, glass blowing and print making. Before becoming an MFT I worked as a Graphic Designer for an International company where I designed products, product packaging, marketing and promotional materials. Services Provided:
Common areas of focus for individuals include a combination of the following: anxiety, depression, PTSD, grief, behavioral problems, goal setting and achievement, personal growth, self-esteem, mind-body connection, mindfulness, spirituality. Common areas of focus for couples include a combination of the following:
communication, sexuality/intimacy/infidelity, managing household responsibilities, spirituality, co-parenting, life-cycle transitions including welcoming a new child, grief, divorce

Families often experience increased levels of distress during times of transition such as the birth of a child, the loss of someone special, children 'leaving the nest,' career changes, and divorce. Often times these transitions bring with them behavioral concerns, increased anxiety or depression. I am experienced with family systems, and will work with you and your family to increase the understanding between members and work toward shared goals. If you are interested in any of the above services please contact me to discuss availability and to determine if my therapeutic style will be a good fit for you.

Ben has demonstrated his thoughtfulness, expertise and professionalism over the years I have had the pleasure to work alongside him. I highly recommend his therapeutic services, especially for those who are curious, and motivated to explore how biological, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of themselves intersect and interact.

I matter too. I am a person too. I am valuable. I am the baby's whole world so I need to be seen so I don't lose myself.

"Say, Pooh, why aren't you busy?" I said.
"Because it's a nice day," said Pooh.
"Yes, but ---"
"Why ruin it?" he said.
"But you could be doing something Important," I said.
"I am, " said Pooh.
"Oh? Doing what?"
"Listening," he said.
"Listening to what?"
"To the birds. And that squirrel over there."
"What are they saying?" I asked.
"That it's a nice day," said Pooh.
"But you know that already," I said.
"Yes, but it's always good to hear that somebody else thinks so, too," he replied.

Stop and take time to listen today! It's a beautiful day!

For Those Who Hurt On Mother's Day

Mother’s Day. For many people that means flowers and handmade cards and Sunday brunches and waves of laughter. It means celebration and gratitude and warm embraces and great rejoicing. It means resting fully in all that is good about loving and being loved. But not for some people. For some it onl...

It was the "lazy morning at home" that by 8 a.m., I knew could no longer be the lazy morning at home. Restless toddlers, arguments over whose cup it was, and a pile of laundry that six little feet were simply not going to let me fold. The kids needed a change of scenery and a place to burn off some....

10 habits to shape a kind, well-adjusted child

Parenting is a very complex task. If we're not careful, we will become too focused on one aspect and let the others fall by the wayside. Many times, I see parents who are intently focused on discipline, and I'm talking about the traditional use of the word here with regard to modifying behavior. Som...
