The new year has begun, but the holidays aren't quite over in our building. Our little tree of friendship is still by the elevators at 259 Monroe Ave. for another few days! Each paper ornament has the name and interests of an adult or youth waiting for a Compeer friend or mentor. Thanks to our program coordinators, Amoya and Liz, who trimmed the tree just before Christmas. Here's hoping the new year brings some new connections!

We continued Holiday Spirit Week at Compeer all week long! After celebrating Chanukah traditions highlighted in our last post, theme days had staff wearing holiday headgear and walking the halls in comfy footwear (Thawed Thursday). We also enjoyed a hot cocoa bar, tried our hand at “junk journaling,” and decorated cookies!

Compeer is celebrating the holidays this week! Yesterday, in honor of Chanukah, we learned more about Jewish traditions thanks to our Youth Peer Advocates, Kennedy (left) and Loo (right). The day featured three candles lit on the menorah, milk chocolate coins, festive decorations, and Loo’s latkes — a delicious taste of the holiday.

Earlier this week, we attended the City of Rochester Police Department's Workforce Development Graduation. Ten participants are moving on to the police academy, including some who were kind enough to volunteer at our Compeer Mile this year! In fact, 19 volunteers from the program, under the leadership of Sgt. Justin Collins, showed up ready to help us with the event and support us in our mission. Ready to serve our community from day one — what a bright future for Rochester! Congratulations to the graduates!

You read that right. This Giving Tuesday, we aren’t asking for your money. Hear us out:

You’re probably seeing lots of posts today from organizations asking for money. It’s true, many nonprofits survive on the kindness of its audience to support them with donations. But, we know – the dollars add up.

So this holiday season, we are asking our supporters to think about a different kind of gift – one that is more precious than dollars: the gift of time.

By spending 4 hours a month with someone who needs a friend, you can change a life. And it won’t cost you a cent. But it will absolutely keep our life-saving programs alive.

This Giving Tuesday, donate your time. Volunteer as a friend with Compeer: https://www.compeerrochester.org/become-a-volunteer

This Cyber Monday, before you swipe through another deal… take a pause. Here's why:

The average American spends 64 hours a month scrolling on social media. A Compeer volunteer spends 4 hours a month connecting — and makes a life-changing difference.

Today, step away from the feed and toward someone who needs you. Scroll less. Connect more. It's that simple.
