June is designated as Cataract Awareness Month by Prevent Blindness. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

With a cataract, your vision may appear cloudy or blurry. The eye's lens get cloudy because of a cataract, which blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye. A dilated eye exam helps check for signs of cataracts.

The vision van team went to Greece Central’s Longridge School today to perform eye exams for students and measure for glasses, which they will receive at a later date.

The service is part of our outreach mission to ensure that kids can see well in school regardless of health care access. Pediatric Ophthalmologist Matthew Haynie performed the exams, and Optician Tom Scalzo helped the kids pick out their glasses and pre-fit them. Thanks team for all the great work you do!

The American Academy of Ophthalmology marks May as Healthy Vision Month. Around 37 million adults in the United States live with conditions that can cause visual impairment or blindness. Things like a healthy diet, not smoking, wearing sunglasses with UV protection, and limiting time with screens if possible, can help keep your eyes healthy.

Prevent Blindness marks April as Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month. On average, conditions like age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma, among others, are more likely to affect women.

Around the world, there are over 100 million more women than men who live with vision loss. According to a study, the gender discrepancy can be attributed to factors like women living longer than men, and women having reduced access to eye care.

April is designated as Sports Eye Safety Month by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Tens of thousands of eye injuries occur every year through sports and recreation. Basketball has been found to be the leading cause of sports eye injuries, followed by baseball and softball.

Consider wearing eye protection to reduce the likelihood of damage to your eyes. Some of the greatest of all time have done it, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar!

A total solar eclipse is an incredible event. However, not everyone can experience it in the traditional sense. Those who live with low vision, total blindness, or other conditions affecting their vision, may not have the ability to view the moon as it passes in front of the sun. There are other ways though to experience the eclipse. We wanted to pass along an event dedicated to helping people who live with conditions that affect their vision experience the eclipse.
