The Smith family was enjoying a day at the beach when their son, Beckham, appeared to have a grain of sand get in his eye. It turned out to be more than just sand. Beckham had a large mass in his left eye and was diagnosed with retinoblastoma. He needed treatment immediately. As they were preparing to travel to Philadelphia to get treatment, one phone call changed everything and led them to the Flaum Eye Institute and the University of Rochester.

We'd like to welcome Emily Darling, O.D. to our team! She completed her residency with us earlier this year, and will be practicing at our College Town and Geneva locations. Darling provides a wide range of services including eye exams, contact lens fittings, and the diagnosing and managing of ocular diseases, among others.

Our next service chief we'd like you to meet is Dr. Karen Allison, who leads our glaucoma service. Dr. Allison has decades of experience from minimally invasive glaucoma procedures, to complex surgeries. She is passionate about bringing collaborative, and patient-centered vision care to the Rochester community.

Congratulations to Dr. Christine Coward on receiving the Bronze Award for Team Excellence from the Greater Rochester Quality Council. She received the award for her work in creating an on-site food pantry at our South Clinton office. Thank you for your commitment and great work, Dr. Coward, in helping the Rochester community!

Next up for our service chief introductions is Dr. Raja Narayanan. Dr. Narayanan is our retina chief and joined Flaum earlier this year. He has more than 20 years of experience in both clinical and surgical retina care, including pioneering advanced surgical techniques. He is also a leading researcher in his work on stem cell therapies to help restore vision to people with age-related macular degeneration.

November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month. Diabetes can affect more than just your blood sugar. It can also damage blood vessels in your eyes, which can cause diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts. Blood sugar control and an annual eye exam are the best ways to prevent or slow eye problems.

This weekend is the return of the Toast to Your Health wine auction. The auction helps support causes in the local community. Last year's event helped raise over two million dollars that is being used to help our outreach programs and our never-ending mission to help find cures for rare diseases.

Our next service chief we'd like you to meet is Dr. Alex Levin, our chief of pediatrics. He provides care to children with complex eye diseases like hereditary maculopathies, retinal dystrophies, ocular genetic disorders, and other rare diseases. Dr. Levin takes pride in delivering compassionate and cutting-edge care for kids and their families.

Our MobilEyes team is finishing up their community events for the season soon. This Saturday they will be at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Rochester for a vision screening event. We are so thankful for all the great work they do in the community.

At Flaum, we provide eye care ranging from routine eye exams to specialized treatments for rare diseases. We'd like to share the amazing people who lead each of our teams.

First up is Brooke E. Donaher, O.D., F.A.A.O. She leads our optometry team as its service chief. She has experience ranging from routine eye care, to managing patients with glaucoma, diabetes, and other ocular diseases, in addition to fitting contact lenses.
