Bottles are commonplace in the modern world. But just because they exist doesn't mean they are all the same. I own more than 60 bottles (I last counted 68 on the market, but the last 8 are so similar to so many others I haven't bothered to get them)...and only maybe 10 of those would I want anyone feeding a baby with, whether that baby is "breastfed" or "formula-fed". (And no, I'm not going to name names here.)
Did you know that "teat" is the official term for the "ni**le" of the bottle? Yep. And did you know that babies should be drinking from slow flow teats until they move to drinking from cups (by age one). There are a few exceptions to this, but rarely.
But there's no standard for what slow flow means. A baby should be able to drink about an ounce in five minutes...it shouldn't take much longer than that and ideally not faster. Their mouth should be wide open to drink and suckle...with a LOT of the teat in their mouth. And the bottle level with the ground, with SOME milk in the teat.
Most of the teats on the market are NOT a shape that makes any sense biologically. Look at the lower row of illustrated teats in the graphic...you want to avoid those most of the time. Of course, there are exceptions, but if you baby ONLY takes one of the shapes in the lower row, see an IBCLC to find out WHY.
If your baby gags, sputters, falls asleep quickly while drinking, gulps, screams, comes off frequently during a feed, or leaks milk while drinking from a bottle (or breast/chest), these are all signs that something isn't going as well as would be optimal. Feedings should be calm, with rhythm...cozy...and baby should be calm or asleep after a feeding. If not, get help.
