A message from our very own, Whitney Gregory-Neely:
Good Morning!
Happy Juneteenth EVE!!!!!!!!
It is an absolute honor to recognize Juneteenth!
What is Juneteenth?
a holiday celebrated on 19 June to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. (AFRICAN AMERICANS). The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.
What Juneteenth represents ? Juneteenth gets its name from combining "June" and "nineteenth," the day that Gen. Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, bearing a message of freedom for the slaves there.
“I personally remember when the day Juneteenth was taught in school. I was in the 12th grade and a substitute teacher was going over the Emancipation Proclamation and went into a spill on why we should celebrate Juneteenth as well. Thankfully, my parents had taught us what Juneteenth was at home. Juneteenth was not taught at my school. Juneteenth is a big deal for the African American Culture, and we should acknowledge it.”
