Did you know. Plantar warts are small, rough growths on the feet. They usually show up on the balls and heels of the feet, the areas that bear the most pressure. This pressure may also cause a wart to grow inward beneath a hard, thick layer of skin (callus).

What is a wart? A wart is an infection caused by a virus. It can invade your skin through small cuts or breaks and contact with public areas like locker rooms and swimming pool areas. With time the wart can become a hard, rough growth on the surface of the skin. It is more commonly seen on the bottom of the foot and called a plantar wart, but it can also be found on other parts of the foot. Children, teens, and people with a weakened immune system are more susceptible to the wart virus. Warts may appear spongy with a small red, brown, or black spots. They can grow into a larger single wart or a mosaic wart that is a cluster of warts. Every wart has its own supply of blood and nerves. These can often be mistaken for corns or calluses. They can cause pain when standing or walking. Warts can continue for years or go away and come back in the same spot and sometimes spread to other parts of the foot. Our podiatrists can examine your wart/s and determine a treatment plan. Dr. Duckwitz and Dr. Shelley at Sweetwater Foot & Ankle are your specialists, serving needs in Wyoming for over 20 years.

Ingrown toenail:
An ingrown nail is the result of a nail growing into the skin that surrounds it. This often occurs at either edge of the big toe. Ingrown nails may be caused by incorrect trimming, injuries, fungal infections, or pressure from shoes. Inherited nail deformities also can play a role.
Symptoms:
Ingrown nails may cause pain anywhere from the top to the base of the toe. Pain is often worse during walking. The toe may become infected or inflamed or develop a more serious problem. Symptoms of infection include warmth, drainage, or redness around the nail.
Treatment:
If the nail isn't infected, your podiatrist may trim the corner of it to help relieve your symptoms. They may need to remove a side of your nail back to the cuticle area. The root of the nail may then be treated with a chemical, or surgical procedure, to keep the ingrown part of the nail from growing back on that side. Severe infections or ingrown nails may require treatment with antibiotics and removal of a portion or all of the nail. To prevent pain, a local anesthetic may be used during these procedures, which are usually done at your podiatrist's office.

What is Arthritis?
Degenerative arthritis is a condition that slowly wears away joints (where bones meet and move). At first, the joints may seem stiff and even ache. As the lining breaks down, the bones rub against each other causing pain and swelling. Over time bone spurs develop and range of motion becomes limited. You do not have to live with this, the symptoms of arthritis can be reduced. Come talk to our doctors to see how they can help you. ☺️👣
